English L.O: To write a diary entry from the perspective of Mina.

Activity 1: Listen to Chapter 13 of 'Skellig' on the Learning --> Stories page of the website (you will listen to Chapter 14 after you have completed the following task).

Activity 2: In this chapter, Mina takes Michael to Crow Road. You are going to write a diary from Mina’s point of view. Your diary will give details about Mina’s feelings and opinions about what happens when she shows the house.

Make sure you start your diary entry with today's date and start your entry with the words: "I decided to take Michael to see the owls today....."

Your entry should include the following:

  • What you said to Michael
  • Why you want the place to be kept a secret
  • What the house looks like on the inside and the outside 
  • What the attic looks like
  • What the owls do / look like
  • Why you wanted Michael to see the owls
  • Why you made Michael keep it a secret
Checklist/ Self Assessment:

A diary entry should:

  • Be written in the past tense (remember to use past tense verbs).
  • Be written in first person (using pronouns such as I, me, we).
  • Discuss how the character feels whilst describing the events which have taken place.
  • Include adverbials to sequence events (e.g 'this morning, 'next', 'after that', 'hours later etc.).

History L.O: To explore who Billy Butlin was and what he did.

Activity 1: Consider the following question and write down some ideas: If we were going on a holiday, what should we not take and why?

Activity 2: Take a look at this scene and answer the questions below:

You are at the beach, you are looking around and when you look carefully, you can see lots of sea creatures. In your home learning books write down:

  • The name of the creatures you can see at the beach.
  • Where they are found.
  • What they are doing – have some fun with this one!

Activity 3: Read the information below and come up with some questions you might have for Billy Butlin!

Activity 4: Watch the following video of a Butlins advertisement from the mid 20th century:

Activity 6: Consider how YOU feel about the idea of the seaside being destroyed in exchange for a new road to be built to allow more people to visit.

Choose one of the following activities in response to this letter:

  • A protest poster detailing why it is a bad idea.
  • A letter of complaint to the council.
  • A letter persuading Billy Butlin not to open his camp there.
  • Suggest alternative answers to the problem of traffic. This may include ways of protecting the wildlife e.g. building a Sea Creatures Centre.
