Monday 18th May

English: L.O To write a first person recount.

Activity 1: Ask an adult or older sibling to test you on the new 10 spellings you received on Monday 11th May (I would always reduce your spellings from 15 to 10 after SATs week) and make a record of your score in your home learning books . New spellings for you to be tested on next week can be found below.

Activity 2: : Listen to Chapter 4 of 'The Stolen Sister' on the Learning --> Stories page of the website.

Activity 3: Open the following link where you will learn more about how to write a recount: Writing a Recount. When you have opened the webpage, watch the first video, read the information below it and complete ONLY Activity 1.

Activity 4: Use all you have learnt today and all that you know about recounts and the story so far to write a recount (a diary entry preferably) from Joe's perspective of recent events. He arrived at work with his boss, Alfred Tralawney shortly after eating breakfast with Ma and Pa Bigsby. Later that day, it transpires that Mr Tralawney's daughter and Elfie's half sister Rosalind has been kidnapped and Joe makes it his mission to intercept the kidnapper as he delivers a ransom note to Mr Tralawney's office.

Write a minimum of 2 paragraphs. Your success criteria is to include as many of the key features from Activity 1 on the BBC bitesize webpage as you can.

Maths
Year 5 L.O: To convert improper fractions into mixed numbers and vice versa.

Activity 1: Watch the demonstration video below for today's lesson. This is a topic we have covered in class but today is an opportunity to consolidate and solidify this existing understanding.

Remember:

1) When converting from an improper fraction to a mixed number, you must work out how many of the denominator (bottom number) fit into the numerator (top number). In the example below, 3 goes into seven 2 times which means in this fraction there is 2 wholes and one left over so the answer will be 2 wholes and 1 third.

2) When converting a mixed number to an improper fraction, you multiply the whole number by the denominator and then add the numerator and put this answer over the denominator you had to start with. In the example below, 2 x 3 = 6, 6 + 1= 7 so the answer is 7 thirds.

Science L.O: To experiment with changing of materials

Today, you are going to have the opportunity to conduct an experiment into the changing of materials, whether that be a reversible or irreversible change. Changes occur when materials are mixed, heated or cooled. Reversible changes include dissolving and evaporating.

The Growing Crystals Experiment

For this experiment, you will need the following equipment:

  • 1 glass jar, jug or cup
  • salt
  • hot water
  • cotton (string would also work)
  • 1 straw
  • 1 teaspoon
  • 1 paper clip
  • 1 elastic band (a stretchy hair band would also work)
  • magnifying glass (optional)

Activity 1: Once you have gathered your equipment, open up the file below titled 'Growing Crystals Experiment' and carefully follow steps 1-5.

Activity 2: In your home learning books, write a one paragraph hypothesis (prediction) outlining what you think will happen over the course of the week.

Activity 3: I have attached a Growing Crystals Experiment Observation Sheet below for you to track and monitor the progress of your experiment each day for the next 7 days.

P.E.

At a time where we all find ourselves indoors for the most of the day, we should bear in mind how important daily exercise is for our health and wellbeing, particularly our mental health. If you are able to, take your device somewhere with plenty of space (even the garden on a nice sunny day) or clear some space in front of your computer and follow along with Joe Wicks for a 30 minute workout. I will definitely be doing the same!
