Curriculum
Education at Abberley Parochial VC Primary follows our vision for the school and ensures that pupils receive their full entitlement detailed within the National Curriculum for England.
'The curriculum is ambitious, broad, and balanced. It enables all pupils to achieve well and prepares them for future success. Pupils secure strong foundational knowledge in fluent reading, accurate spelling, and mathematics. This is enhanced through a well-planned enrichment programme that provides opportunities for pupils to develop and demonstrate their spiritual capacities' Ofsted March 2025
- Pupils enjoy interactive lessons that sustain their interest and focus, as evidenced by their attentive listening and engagement in learning tasks.
- Published outcomes confirm that pupils achieve well across subjects, meeting and often exceeding national expectations.
- We ensure high expectations for all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, through effective identification and timely support.
- Systematic synthetic phonics is embedded in the early stages of reading, ensuring pupils develop fluency and confidence. Pupils learning English as an additional language receive timely and appropriate support.
- Our small rural school setting allows us to tailor learning experiences while maintaining curriculum breadth and depth, ensuring no pupil is disadvantaged by mixed-age classes.
- The curriculum is underpinned by our vision “Love, Grow and Flourish Together,” which promotes intellectual freedom, exploration of big ideas, and the development of character alongside academic knowledge
'Early reading is prioritised. Staff are highly skilled in delivering phonics lessons. Pupils learn to blend sounds to read simple words and sentences. They apply newly learned sounds when reading books that match these sounds. Pupils who fall behind are swiftly identified' Ofsted March 2025
We want all pupils to leave Abberley as well rounded individuals, with attitudes and skills required to succeed in life and feel empowered to be positive agents of change within our community and in the wider world. Pupils will be taught through a balanced and broad curriculum, enhanced further through our enrichment programme which provides opportunities to develop and demonstrate spiritual capacities.
Each of our subjects is carefully mapped so that sequences of learning are coherent and progressive, allowing for pupils to develop a strong understanding and retain their learning. Vocabulary is at the core of the substantive knowledge our pupils learn. This is taught discretely and revisited throughout the curriculum. Spiritual Development
At Abberley Parochial V.C. Primary School, we value spiritual growth as a way for children to better understand themselves, others, and the world around them. Rooted in our strong Christian ethos and close links with the local church, we provide opportunities for reflection, exploration of beliefs, and moments of awe and wonder. Our curriculum nurtures imagination, creativity, empathy, and resilience, while encouraging children to appreciate beauty, show generosity, reflect on life’s big questions, and develop a sense of inner strength and purpose.
