  • Cracking Cardiff

    Published 07/11/24

The Year 5 and 6 children had a fantastic time in Cardiff for their residential.

On day one the children visited Cardiff Castle and were given a thorough and informative tour on the family history of the most recent owners. They had the opportunity to ask questions and admire the Victorian architecture. Later that afternoon, after dinner, the children visited a local bowling alley before having cookies and juice on Senedd steps, overlooking the bay.

On day two, the children began their day with a hearty breakfast, followed by a visit to the Senedd (the Welsh parliament building). The children took part in a fantastic workshop with local guide, Huw, who led the children in a real debate.

Later, we took the water taxi to the National museum of Wales. The children had the opportunity to observe some incredible exhibitions, including the temporary exhibition, 'The Art of the Selfie' which included some amazing pieces including the priceless 'Portrait of the Artist (1887) which is currently on loan at the museum.

That evening, we had great fun watching Shrek for movie night followed by an evening of games in the Urdd centre which included pool, connect four, top trumps and dobble.

On our final morning in Cardiff, after a great breakfast, the children took a train back to the National museum to enjoy the natural history exhibitions. This exhibition was a fantastic, interactive part of the museum which showed the development of our world from the very beginning of time! After catching the train back to the centre, we all enjoyed lunch followed by a well deserved ice cream by the bay.

The children were an absolute pleasure to take to Cardiff this year. On several occasions, they were complimented by centre members on their manners and politeness and they showed great maturity when navigating a busy city. We are very proud they are part of our Abberley community.

  • Merlins and Noise Pollution in Abberley

    Published 10/10/24

Year 5 and 6 pupils embarked on a fieldwork study this week to investigate the impact of noise pollution and litter in Abberley. Armed with data collection tally charts, Likert scales and voice recorders, the children gathered information from two separate village locations, one more populated than the other.

The study aimed to help children understand how environmental issues affect their community. Pupils recorded high noise levels near busy roads and found some evidence of litter in green spaces. Their findings will support children in answering the key question in their current geography unit: 'How is population change affecting our environment?'

A huge thank you to all who have already made a donation. However, if you were unable to attend, but would like to donate, here is our school's QR code.

The total amount of donations collected during the coffee morning and online will be shared in next week's newsletter.

  • New outdoor reading sheds

    Published 10/10/24

Yesterday, the reading leaders enjoyed arranging books and bunting to launch our new outdoor reading sheds. At playtimes and lunchtimes, all children are able to have the opportunity to sit quietly and enjoy reading a book or choose to run around with their friends. I'm sure these new exciting places will help inspire some of our reluctant readers to start on their journey of reading for pleasure.

Thank you to the Friends for all the fundraising events you organised so we could purchase these reading sheds.
