Oh là là, Le Café Abberley!
Today in Dance, the children put together and performed a Bhangra dance. Bhangra is a dance that originated in the Punjab region of a India and was a celebratory dance during harvest time. Despite their time limitation, they worked hard as a group to construct a routine and to follow it accurately.
This week is Children's Mental Health Week.
Yesterday afternoon, all the children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 took part in the RSPB Big Garden birdwatch. We had prepared the feeding station the previous week in order to encourage our local birds into the area. The children then spent the afternoon observing the different types of birds who were visiting the feeders and surrounding environment from a hide constructed in the school greenhouse. The sightings were recorded on the RSPB record sheets.
We recorded a wide range of different species throughout the afternoon from Robins and Blackbirds to Starlings and Chaffinches. However, the highlight of the afternoon was the arrival of a Goldcrest, which is one of Britain’s smallest and shyest residents. It was a really fantastic afternoon that the children all enjoyed hugely and the data that we collected will form part of the RSPB’s ongoing research into the health of our garden bird populations. This research is vital for our understanding not only of trends within bird populations but also gives us an insight into the health of wider local food webs of which they form a significant part.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the children who took part and to Mrs Day for preparing the feeders, setting up the hide and being an enthusiastic participant throughout the afternoon. Hopefully, next year will be just as successful!
Mr Darling
In science this afternoon, Y5&6 were investigating air resistance. They made paper aeroplanes of varying designs and then tested how far each of them flew. The children shared their results with each other and then drew their conclusions as to what helped the aeroplanes fly the furthest using their knowledge of forces.
Well done to the children in the picture above who have demonstrated our Abberley Values this week.
We were investigating different liquids and what they may do to the enamel of our teeth. Of course, we did not use real teeth! So instead we used eggshells as they react in the same way as enamel.
Years 3,4,5 and 6 had a fantastic morning watching the theatre performance 'Back to the App'. This performance told the story of three teenagers finding themselves 'inside' the apps on their phones and the many lessons they learnt about safe and responsible internet use along the way. The children later took part in a workshop with the actors where they discussed what they had watched and even had the opportunity to perform themselves!
Year 5/6 represent the school at West Worcestershire School Games Tournament.
We were extremely lucky in Year 5 and 6 this week to take part in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) challenge led by Worcester County Council. The children had a fantastic afternoon working collaboratively to create a bridge installation system with K'Nex. Their builds had to include a bridge, transportation for the bridge into its position, a mechanism and size restriction. We were so proud of how the children were able to work as a team to problem solve and admired their resilience and determination.
