Our value in Collective Worship at the moment is

Forgiveness

I hope you all enjoyed the summer fair last week and thank you to all who worked so hard to make this event happen.

This week we received some fantastic news about a grant application which has been successful and we have been awarded £3,000 towards the refurbishment of the school's wildlife area. Once completed, this will be a wonderful learning resource to enrich our curriculum and provide a calm, mindfulness area for pupils. Exciting times ahead!

Next Friday the ECO pupil group have requested that all children come to school wearing something green as part of an ECO awareness day. During the day the whole school will take part in activities to learn more about why we have sponsored a mountain gorilla with WWF.

Looking forward to September, I would like to share the class arrangements. Next Thursday we will be welcoming into school our new Reception pupils for their final visit while the rest of the school will spend the morning with their new teachers and in their new classrooms. All staff are always around after school on the playgrounds if you wish to say hello to your child's new teacher.

Wrens

Wow, what another busy week it has been in Wrens. We have been working hard all week to learn the songs for the Early Years Music Festival.  Check out the news article to see how we got on.

In Topic, we learnt all about Mary Anning, a famous palaeontologist who discovered the first complete dinosaur skeleton in the United Kingdom.

In maths, we have been exploring patterns and the children have really impressed us by making 3, 4 and even 5 step patterns using actions and objects.

In RE, we learnt about some of the internal features of a Christian church.  We are looking forward to visiting Abberley Church next week and going on a treasure hunt to see what we can spot.  We had a very interesting live Collective Worship on Wednesday with a former Paralympic Long Jumper.  We found out what it takes to be a top athlete and compete at the Olympics and Paralympics.  On Thursday we got to try out our own sports skills on the field as we practised some of the events for Sports Day on Monday. We can't wait!

Due to the additional activities taking place at school between now and the end of term we will not be running any more rainbow challenges. We have been very impressed with how the children have embraced these learning opportunities over the last 2 terms and we feel it has made the children much more independent in their learning. So much so that Miss Rixon is hoping to incorporate some form of rainbow challenges into the year 1 curriculum.

This will also be the last week we are sending home Little Wandle reading books and library books. Please can you have a hunt around at home and ensure all outstanding books are returned to school by the end of next week. Thank you!

Skylarks

This week the children have had the opportunity to show off their knowledge by completing assessments for reading, writing and maths. They have worked hard on these and should be very proud of themselves.

In computing this week, Year 1 have been practising their mouse skills by drawing a self portrait using the laptops. Year 2 worked in pairs to create a stop motion animation.

In history, we focused on the chronology of Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell's lives. The children identified who was born first and who was a nurse for longer. In groups they then arranged a timeline of life events for them both. Afterwards, we explored why Edith Cavell and Florence Nightingale acted the way that they did and why they are significant historical figures.

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in a red phonics book. Information is on the front page of the red book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. The library 'sharing' book should be enjoyed and read together as it will contain words with graphemes which have not been taught in school yet

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) 'Garage' set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. Spellings go home on a Friday to learn before the test the following Friday. There are 10 games on Spelling Shed set to help the children learn these

Timetable

Monday: Little Wandle book and library book to be returned to school. New library 'sharing' book will come home tonight

Years 3 & 4

In science, the children investigated forces with a specific focus on magnetism and how magnets work. The children discovered how magnetic fields work and what materials are attracted, or not, to magnets.

In computing, the children worked collaboratively on a website about Capybaras.

This week in French, the children studied how French birthdays are celebrated and if there are any similarities or differences between them and a British birthday celebration.

In DT, the children have made and tested their slingshot cars and begun developing a shell for their vehicles.

Kestrels

The children have worked hard this week completing assessments in reading, writing and maths. This has been a good opportunity for them to show us all that they have learnt this year. The children worked very hard and should be proud with what they have achieved.

They have also been getting reading for our summer production, with a dress rehearsal, giving the children opportunity to perform in front of the KS1 children. They were a fantastic audience and seemed entranced by the acting and singing.

Merlins

In Merlins this week, it has been assessment week. The children have completed a number of assessments in reading, writing and maths. These are for us as a school to see just how much progress the children have made throughout the year. Yet again, year 6 showed a determined and mature attitude and tried their absolute best.

In English, the children were inferring the thoughts of feeling of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth after being given the news that Macbeth has been given more power and tittles by King Duncan and he plans to stay the night at their castle in Glamis.

In maths, we have been exploring the nets of 3D shapes and reasoning as to why some nets will not make certain shapes and even drawing and creating nets of our own.
