On Wednesday Kingfishers had a wonderful visit to Chedworth Roman Villa. The children and I were in awe as we walked above mosaics handcrafted by Romans over two thousand years ago. It is amazing to consider how advanced they were in their understanding and technology. The hypocaust heating system with hollow brick walls were incredible to see, and we all felt we would have enjoyed a visit to the spa on site.

Please could we remind parents to e-mail or phone school when children are unwell. We are not permitted to assume that children are unwell, even if they were off the day before, so we do need some form of contact on each day that they will be off sick.

Also, please note that on Tuesday 6th December we will be having a non-uniform day in aid of prizes for the tombola at the Christmas Fair.

Best wishes for the weekend.

Mr Turvey

On Thursday 15th December, we will be having our Christmas lunch. As the nativity for KS1 will be later in the afternoon, we have taken the decision to have this in our school hall. The children will come in as a group pre-school, reception and year 1 together, Year 2 to year 4 together and then year 5 and 6. This is a great occasion to enjoy a Christmas lunch with friends and crackers and decorations will be provided by the Friends Association.

Following the nativity, the library will be open where professional pictures taken during rehearsals will be available to order.

Wrens

It has been a very exciting week in Wrens as we started rehearsals for our nativity play. On Thursday we went over to the Village Hall and learnt when we need to be on stage and where we will need to stand. If your child has brought home words to learn we would be very grateful if you could help them practise. Thank you!

In RE we made some fantastic collaborative story maps of the nativity story and we showed excellent knowledge of the events and characters. Next week we will start to explore how Christians celebrate Christmas.

In maths we have been using artwork to explore shape through creating paintings using circles and triangles. At Forest School we played hide and seek and made an obstacle course to practise our positional language.

Year 1 have been exploring finding missing numbers in an addition calculation this week. We have shown great perseverance with this tricky topic.

All of the children have brought home a laminated sheet today showing the correct letter and number formation. I hope you find these helpful to support your children with their learning at home.

Now the weather is turning colder please can you ensure your child brings a hat and gloves to school. We do try and get outside most days and the wind on the playground is chilly!

Skylarks

This week in music we started learning songs for the Nativity. I’m sure over the coming weeks you will find yourself singing along as your child continues to sing them at home! If you child has some lines to say, please can you help your child to recite them so they can enjoy performing them with confidence when on the stage. As a school we will provide costumes, although you may be asked to provide some clothing items such as tights, but this will be communicated to individual parents in due course.

In computing, we are continuing to discuss who are trustworthy and untrustworthy adults and what information is ok to share whilst online. This week, we designed some super information posters to help other children to learn this important message.

In science, we learned some similarities and differences between turtles and tortoises. Mrs Lightfoot talked about her pet tortoise and how it hibernates for winter in a fridge!

In PSHE, we talked about why some children might bully other children and how bullied children might feel. We learnt the meaning of the word ‘bullied’ and when to use it.

In history, we compared how football today is different from when Walter Tull played. As homework, you might like to watch a modern football match as there is an important match being played tonight!

In English, Year 2’s are busy writing up their nonfiction reports incorporating all the facts they have learnt on their chosen topic. We are remembering to use headings, subheadings and factual sentences.

In maths, Year 2’s are using their mental recall of number bonds and quick methods of adding 10 more to solve more complicated addition problems. Here is a link for practising a written addition method of using a number line Add and Subtract on a Number Line - Mathsframe (click add near multiples of 10 to 2 digit numbers)

Kingfishers

We have had another busy week in Kingfishers class!

In English, we have been focusing on newspaper reports. The children are preparing to write their own about the discovery of the miracle words in the web in our book, Charlotte's Web. We have identified and analysed the key features of newspaper reports and the purpose that these have. The children have learnt the difference between direct and reported speech. We have also focused on how fronted adverbials can sequence and link events effectively.

In maths, we have moved onto our new topic of 'Multiplication and Division'. The children have been identifying equal groups and solving multiplication questions using arrays. We have been practising our times tables with lots of games, such as bingo and hit the button. It is so important that the children keep practising their multiplication and division facts up to 12x12 at home to help them with their maths.

On Wednesday, we went to Chedworth Roman Villa. We had a tour from an expert and were able to experience life as it would have been for the Romans. The children learnt lots about how the Romans relaxed and the luxuries rich Romans had, such as hypocaust systems (underfloor heating) and beautiful mosaic flooring to exhibit their wealth. The children were a credit to the school and will hopefully be able to tell you lots of things that they learnt!

Kestrels

In English, we have continued to read 'The Silver Sword'. The children have been focussing on diary writing over the past two weeks and have used the skills they have gained to write a diary entry as Ruth. They have used the chapters of our class book describing how the children found refuge at a farm as the stimulus for their writing.

In maths we moved on with our topic of fractions and have spent this week learning how to compare both fractions less than one and fractions more than one. The children have learned about common denominators and once again, realised that how having secure knowledge of their time tables makes it easier to find these. This might explain the children's enthusiasm for TTRS and the effort they have been putting into improving their speed!

In science, the children have been working hard to finish their dinosaur timelines and have enjoyed adding mini fact files to the drawings they have created. It was interesting to see how the dinosaurs changed and evolved from the Triassic to the Cretaceous periods.

In art, the children have been busy designing and painting individual works of art which I am sure you will love. These will be available to buy at the Christmas Fayre in a couple of weeks.

Merlins

This week in Merlins class we have been writing with empathy. We have built up towards writing a diary entry from Ruth Balicki's perspective, one of our main characters in our book 'The Silver Sword'. Ruth has been through it quite the ordeal and we have been writing emotively to demonstrate and detail her experience.

In maths, we have been converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. Later in the week, we have begun to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. Next week, we will be practising multiplying fractions.

In History this week we have been learning about the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb. We learnt of the story of Howard Carter and Lord Canarvan and how they worked tirelessly for years to find the missing tomb of the boy king. We wrote as Howard Carter about our thoughts and feelings leading up to and after this momentous event.
