Thank you to our incredible friend's association for arranging a wonderful summer fair for our school and community to enjoy. It was wonderful to see everyone smiling and enjoying themselves and some familiar faces that we don't see so often anymore. We appreciate all of the effort and time that went into organising the event.

Our reception children had a busy week this week. They enjoyed a wonderful farm visit on Tuesday, joined me for the morning on Wednesday whilst our new reception children settled into their new class, and attended the pirate themed music festival at The Chantry. They have grown so much this year and it has been a pleasure to see them full of excitement and embracing these great opportunities with such positivity.

It was wonderful to meet our new reception children this week. They seemed to enjoy the day and appear well prepared for the whole school transition morning on Thursday. We hope that all of our pupils enjoy the opportunity to get used to their new classes and staff that they will work with.

Yours sincerely,

Joel Turvey

Sports Day - 17th July

This will be held on the afternoon of Monday 17th July. Parents are welcome to arrive from 12.45pm and enter through the wooden gate onto the field. Please bring your own chairs (and sunshade if it is a hot day) and enjoy the afternoon with us.

Please position you chairs along the fence and end of the field and leave a few metres from the track to enable everyone to see the start and finish.

The children will be out at lunch until 1pm, so please bring along some ice creams or ice lollies to enjoy with them before they go back into school for registration. We aim to be back onto the field by 1.10pm to start sports day.

Please note that there are no toilet facilities for those spectating and visitors should not go into the school buildings without signing in at the office and being accompanied by a member of staff.

Class teachers and structure for next year

Reception - Wrens - Mrs Lightfoot supported by Mrs Lench

Year 1 & 2 - Skylarks - Miss Rixon supported by Mrs Birch and Mrs Williams

Year 3 - Kingfishers - To be confirmed supported by Mrs Gibbons

Year 4 & 5 - Kestrels - Mrs Gregory supported by Mrs Roberts (new teaching assistant)

Year 6 - Merlins - Miss Harvey

Due to the nature of our school curriculum, during afternoon sessions, year 3 & 4 will be taught together and year 5 & 6 will be taught together.

Due to Mrs Shelley taking on the role of interim headteacher, we will be recruiting a teacher for September to work with kingfishers class. We have had a number of positive applications and visits. The deadline for applications is Sunday evening. It is anticipated that Mrs Shelley will return to work with Kingfishers on the appointment of a substantive headteacher.

Miss Hughes is likely to start the term with us in September, but will commence maternity leave shortly afterwards.

Mrs Gregory will be taking on the role of SENCO from September for the interim period.

Charity fun run - 20th July

On Thursday 20th July, we will be doing our termly cross country run. We have normally completed this for 'Race for Life'. However, this is not being arranged for schools this year, so we will be collecting sponsorship for a local children's charity still to be decided by the CREW group. As it is a Thursday PE kits should be in school anyway, but children are welcome to come to school in their PE kit and bring a fancy costume (particularly year 6) or bright clothing to wear for the run if they would like to.

There is no specific distance of the run. We are encouraging children to complete at least two laps of the school, which is 1km.

We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

In science today, Merlins were using their scientific knowledge to carry out investigations involving electricity. They were finding out what happens when you add more cells to a circuit and also what happens when more bulbs are added to a circuit. The children made predictions and then tested these...

Skylarks

In Skylarks the children have had a wonderful week exploring using prepositional language within their writing. They practised using words such as 'inside', 'next to', 'beneath', 'on top of' etc to describe where objects were to give the reader more detail. Of course, they also had to remember the use of super adjectives to describe their nouns.

In maths, the children have been learning to interpret pictograms to analyse data. These pictograms are graphs that include using a key to see what each symbol represents. For example, one smiley face might equal one person counted. Over the next week or so, the children will create their own pictograms based on data they have collected. Also, we have been using language to describe directions and used this language to guide our partner to successfully navigate through a course to finally sit on a chair.

In RE, the Year 1s and 2s have learnt all about sacred places, specifically a Mosque. The Mosque is a Muslim place of worship and throughout the lesson the children learnt all about what the outside of Mosque looks like and the important rituals that take place inside.

In science, all children in Years 1 and 2 have learnt about edible parts of a plant. Some plants you can eat the root, some the stem, some the leaves and some the flowering part. We looked at the plants that have been grown by the children and Mrs Day in the garden at school and discussed which parts were grown to eat. In our garden, we eat the flowering part of the strawberry plant, the stem of the rhubarb and the seeds of the peas.

In PSHE, we have been learning differences between boys and girls and using scientific names for different body parts. We discussed what makes parts of our bodies private and used the correct names for these parts: penis, testicles, vagina and anus.

In history, we used our detective clues to identify objects from the Victorian era which were found around a home. Ask your child what a 'codd bottle' is?

In PE, we had our final practise session to try and beat any personal bests, ready to select the races we would like to take part in on Sport's Day.

Please could you have a search at home for any Little Wandle reading books as we have books missing from our sets.  Thank you.

Kingfishers

This week in English, we have read more of our book The Boy at the Back of the Class. We have found out that the main characters are writing a letter to the queen to try and convince her to keep the borders open. The children will be rewriting and improving on the fictional letter next week. In preparation for this task, the children have identified formal and informal tones and what each are used for. We have also been exploring linguistic techniques used in persuasive writing such as the rule of three, emotive language and rhetorical questions. The children will be rewriting this letter, using a more formal tone and persuasive techniques.

In maths, we have finished off our unit on time. This week, the children have been converting between 12 hour and 24 hour clock. They have also been comparing lengths of time and have used this to problem solve. The children have also been calculating lengths of time and have been learning to convert these into seconds, minutes and hours.

In history this week, we were learning about how the Ancient Greeks used to trade. The children learnt about who they traded with, what products they would have traded and also learnt about Greek colonisation to surrounding countries.

In science, the children explored different soil types. They investigated how the soils were different and suggested why they had these differences. The children also learnt about what was in soils and were able to suggest how it got there.

Kestrels

In English, we have continued to read 'Wild Boy'. After the murder we read about last week, Wild Boy and acrobat, Clarissa Everett, have been framed for a second murder. We have read about their escape from the angry circus folk and how they are hiding out in the sewers with help from Sir Oswald, a fellow circus performer. We have looked in more depth at how the author is using colour to create atmosphere and describe the setting and are working towards using this to write a setting description.

In maths, we have been working with negative numbers.  We discussed when negative numbers are used in real life and talked about temperatures and overdrafts! The children used number lines to help them find differences between positive and negative numbers.

In PSHE, we continued our 'Changing Me' unit and this week the children learned about how there are many different types of relationships. We also learned about conception and talked about the different ways that babies might be created. The children always astonish me with their maturity and openness during our PSHE sessions, leading us to have valuable and insightful conversations.

In science, Y5 have recapped how to draw electrical symbols and how to use these to create simple circuits. Y6 are a week ahead and carried out investigations into the effect of having more cells or bulbs in a circuit.

Merlins

This week in Merlins' class we have been continuing to read our book 'Wild Boy'. We have reached a point in the story where Wild Boy returns to the workhouse he was taken from years ago. He has many dark and sinister memories from this place. Our next writing task will be to write a flashback from the perspective of Wild Boy about his time in the workhouse. This week, however,  we learned to write a flashback using the short film by Bibo.

In maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of square numbers, number sequences, adding and subtracting decimals and order of operations with a variety of mathematical challenges.

We spent our entire Tuesday over at the village hall rehearsing for our summer production. Rehearsals have been going well and children are becoming more confident in reciting their lines. This week we introduced the challenge of using props on stage. This was our final rehearsal before our dress rehearsal and performances in the last week of term.

In history, we have been learning about the rise and fall of Baghdad. This week we have been using a variety of sources to help us come to conclusions about how the fall of Baghdad impacted those living in the city. This terrifying siege from the Mongols caused destruction and chaos. We summarised the main events that led to the fall of the great city of the Caliphs.
