Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla

The children have had a lovely day celebrating the Coronation in their red, white and blue outfits.  The crowns at the entrance to the school are well worth a look and will be part of the trail over the weekend.  The children who took part in the competition to design a crown were awarded their 1st, 2nd and 3rd certificates as part of the celebrations this afternoon.  Thank you to The Friends Association who organised the activities and to everyone for taking part in this wonderful historical event.

Wrens

This week we have been celebrating the King's coronation in Wrens.  The children enjoyed playing in our palace themed role play and dressing up in our royal outfits.  We also held our own royal tea party activities and made crowns, flags and sparkly bracelets.

We had a wonderful day on Wednesday when Reception visited The Chantry to take part in the Tiny Olympics.  The children were a credit to the school and really enjoyed the challenge of trying some new activities.  We were very proud of the courage and resilience they showed.

In maths this week, Reception have started to explore numbers beyond 10.  We have practised careful counting and ordering numbers to 20 with a focus on thinking of each number as 1 lot of 10 and so many ones.

Year 1 have been continuing their work on repeated addition and multiplication number sentences by looking at arrays.  Arrays are where objects are arranged into equal rows and columns.  It is amazing how many arrays exist in the real world and we had great fun doing an "array hunt" around school.  I have set the children a challenge over the bank holiday weekend of finding and photographing an array at home.

In English, Year 1 have been exploring similes to write descriptions of the giant's kitchen and the giant in Jack and the Bean stalk.  We were very impressed with their lovely creative ideas.

This term, Year 1 have been bringing home a list of words that they will be practising in phonics the following week.  We will be testing the children on spelling a small random selection of these words on Friday mornings.  Please ensure your child practises reading and writing these words in order to support their learning in school.  Thank you!

Skylarks

In English, we have been using our editing skills to check and rewrite our woolly mammoth stories. We have been washing some funny creatures! It is a difficult skill to learn to edit written work and takes lots of practise. Well done Skylarks for using your C.U.P.S. knowledge for super editing.

In maths, we have been learning to read scales and develop our capacity understanding. We had fun using the measuring jugs, filling them with water and reading the different scales. Also this week, we have been using our fraction knowledge to find ¾ of shapes and quantities. We have found out that two quarters is the same as a half.

On Wednesday we used our newly learnt DT skills to design and build miniature playground swings and slides. We found that triangles are the strongest structure when making a frame.

In PSHE, we discussed strategies for helping to mend friendships when we have a disagreement. We have learnt to stop, get ready and then mend the friendship.

Today, we are all very excited about our Coronation Tea Party and everyone looks very colourful wearing their red, white and blue outfits.

Kingfishers

This week in English, we have read more of our book Street Child. The children thought about how Jim, the main character, would be feeling. With these feelings they used thesauruses to find 3 synonyms for each before explaining their reasoning behind this feeling. Also this week, the children recalled events that have happened so far in the book and placed these into a storyboard. Each section of the storyboard had to include a fronted adverbial to sequence the events clearly. Next week we will be writing diary entries as Jim about his escape from the workhouse, so towards the end of the week we recapped on features of diary entries.

In maths, Year 3 identified hundredths as decimals and divided one and two digit numbers by 100. They then moved on to measuring mass, including problem solving. Year 4 have also identified hundredths as decimals and divided one and two digit numbers by 100. They have revised bonds to 10 and 100 and looked at making 1 whole using decimals.

In geography, the children recapped on prior learning of landscapes before beginning to explore the landscapes in the British Isles. They found Worcester and Abberley and were able to explain and describe the landscapes here using the maps and their own knowledge of the areas. After, we started to look at coastlines and the different types that there are around the British Isles.

In PSHE this week, with Purple Leaf, the children began to learn about relationships and what healthy and unhealthy relationships may look like but also how they might make us feel and how our body may respond to both.

Kestrels

In English, the children have continued reading Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief. We have been learning about direct and reported speech and looking at how these are used in newspaper articles. The children have been writing questions and interviewing each other as witnesses to the part of the story where Percy jumps off the Gateway Arch. They then used these quotes to plan a newspaper report on the event.

In maths, we have been recapping the children's understanding of coordinates in the first quadrant. The children have done extremely well remembering the motto "you go into the lift before you can go up or down" and also that x comes before y in the alphabet when writing coordinates and knowing which axis to write first. We ended our plotting coordinates work by playing an adapted version of The Pirate Game, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

In cricket, the children focussed on their accuracy of underarm throwing and catching and ended the session playing a small game in groups of six to put these skills into practice.

In French, Y5&6 have been using the family trees they put together last week to write sentences describing family members based on their hairstyles and eye colours. It was a surprise to the children that in French the adjectives come after the noun, which is the opposite of how they are used to writing in English.

Merlins

This week in Merlins class we have continued to revise learning in topic areas of English and Maths. The children have all worked incredibly hard in preparations for their SATs assessments that will take place next week. I am full of hope that they will perform brilliantly and to their full potential.

In PE this week we refined our baton exchange technique. We practised the 'upsweep' and 'downsweep' and used what we practised in a group relay.

In Computing, we have learnt more about the history of Bletchley Park. We heard the story of how Alan Turing and his team of code breakers finally cracked the Enigma code using the Bombe. The children conducted some paired research about the team and the machines used at Bletchley Park. We were fascinated to find out how this secret team worked tirelessly to crack the code which helped our country go on to win the war.

We offer a family based Traditional Taekwondo class every Friday evening at 1800, in the Martley Memorial Hall.  We run a long term character development programme, that aims to build confidence, discipline and respect, not only in the class room, but for outside and later life. We develop skills that can be used for anti-bullying, self defence, fitness and mental well-being.  Students can enrol automatically from the age of 5 and upwards. We offer a free lesson to see if it is something you will enjoy, which we are sure you will.
