This week in English, we have had a real focus on handwriting, ensuring that the children are keeping their letters sitting on the line rather than floating and that their letters are an appropriate size. We also started investigating our new text. The children were given clues, including a boat, some colouring pencils, a notebook, a pack of tissues and some children’s drawings. They used these clues to create their own predictions about what they think the story is going to be about.
In maths, we started to explore number lines, which we will go into more detail with next week. We also looked at the inequality symbols for greater than, less than and equal to. The children used these symbols to compare different numbers and solve problems. Alongside comparing numbers, they also began thinking about how to order numbers based on their understanding of greater than and less than.
In science, we talked about seeds and investigated different types of seeds that plants can grow from. We then started a science experiment using a broad bean seed, a wet paper towel and a plastic sandwich bag. This has allowed the children to observe how seeds germinate and begin to grow. They have really enjoyed checking their seeds every day and seeing the changes taking place!
In DT this week, the children applied our previous learning and designed their own stable pencil pot structures, ensuring that their designs were fun, stable and had a solid base. They then brought their designs to life and made their pencil pots. The children really enjoyed this topic and particularly enjoyed learning about how structures can be made stronger and more stable.
Homework update:
Year 2: Alongside their usual Little Wandle Reading book, Year 2s will now have maths homework.
They have 15 minutes of TTRS (times tables) to complete. When they log on they should click on 'Garage'. This week we have practised logging on to TTRS and playing the games so hopefully they'll recognise some of it when logging on at home. They also have a new maths '10-Minute Weekly Workout book'. They should complete only 1 workout of this and bring it back to be marked.
All homework will be set on a Friday and needs to be completed by Wednesday.

Year 1:
The priority for Year 1s is reading their Little Wandle books and practising their phonics that comes home on the weekly sheet. However, they also now have logins for Numbots should you or they wish to play some maths games too. This is a website where they can revise maths skills, earning coins along the way.
