Welcome to Wrens!  It has been so lovely to welcome all our new children into school this week and watch them begin to settle into their classroom, form friendships and learn our routines.  The children were very excited to see their Year 6 buddies again who have been doing a fantastic job of taking care of our new starters during breaktimes and lunchtimes.

I thought it would be useful to give a little bit of information with regards to our class organisation and timetable for this half term.

Bookbags
All the children should now have a school bookbag. Please can you ensure that these are sent into school every day as they are really useful for transporting letters, books and artwork to and from school.  If you can add a key ring to your child's bag it makes it easier for them to identify their bag.

Coats
Please could you ensure your child has a waterproof coat in school each day as the Abberley climate is very changeable!

Snacks and lunches
The children have snack and story time each morning.  We do have a selection of fresh fruit in school for the children.  However, if your child would rather bring in their own snack from home, we would prefer this to be fruit/vegetable based if possible.

Library books
The children will be bringing home a book each Friday chosen from our class library. This book is for you to enjoy reading at home with your child. Please can you ensure they are returned to school the following Friday so your child can select a new book.

PE kit
PE will take place on a Thursday.  PE kits can be left in school and they will be sent home each half term for washing.

Forest School
Forest School takes place on a Friday afternoon. Please can you ensure your child has a waterproof coat and if possible wellies in school for this activity (we do have some wellies in school if you don't have a spare pair).  We also have waterproof overalls in school for the children to wear.

What a great start to the school year we have had in Skylarks. I have really enjoyed hearing all of the children's tales from summer and getting to know the Year 1s more.

Please find a brief overview of our class timetable that you may find useful. 

Monday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor) - PE

Tuesday - Outdoor Learning. Please send your child to school with appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather that they can change into.

Thursday - Little Wandle reading books will be sent home. Please return these by the following Tuesday.

Library books will come home at some point in the week. Return them when you have finished with them and they can swap them.

Keep an eye out for the following in their bags as we'll be starting this as the weeks go on rather than straight away.

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the pink phonics book. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Year 2: 1 page of their new mental maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday. Year 2 will also be sent home spellings in their pink spelling book.

It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school and see them settle into their new class so quickly after the summer break.

PE
The children will have outdoor PE on Tuesdays so should make sure they have jogging bottoms and a hoodie with them in case the weather is a little chilly.

They will have indoor PE on Thursdays in the village hall.

I would suggest that the children bring their PE kits in on Mondays and leave it in school until Friday, just in case the weather is against us on Tuesdays.

Homework
The children will bring home their maths homework books on Fridays. They should only complete one week of this and then bring the book back into school by the following Wednesday. These are new maths books and should take the children no more than 15 mins to complete.

They will also have TTRS homework to complete of 15 garage games. This will also be set on a Friday and they have until the following Wednesday to complete it.

The children will get spelling homework but this will not be set until next week.

The children should complete one of the activities in their reading record books and this should be handed in by Friday.

It has been really lovely to welcome our new Year 5 and 6 children into Merlins class. We’ve had a wonderful start to the half term and it has been lovely getting to know each other and settling into our new class routines. We have already started reading our new class book, Wonder, and have begun exploring some of our maths curriculum, including figuring out how to use Roman numerals! It has also been wonderful to see our buddies playing with and looking after the new Reception children. They have been incredibly kind, caring and mature, and we are very proud of them.

A few reminders for this half term:

• PE: Monday and Thursday - please ensure PE kits are in school for these days.
• Reading records: These will go home each Friday to be completed or started for the following week.
• Homework: This will go home each Friday and needs to be back by Wednesday of the following week.
