The Wrens travelled to Australia on Monday as a continuation of their transition book "Emma Jane's aeroplane."  They found out some amazing facts about some very interesting Australian animals, recreated some of the iconic Australian buildings and tried their hands at Aboriginal artwork.  Next Monday they are off to China as the last stop on Emma Jane's journey.

On Tuesday afternoon the children worked hard with Mrs Postlethwaite to master sewing skills and create their own bookmarks in DT.  We were very impressed by the resilience shown by the children during this project and they should be very proud of themselves for learning a new skill.

On Wednesday the children enjoyed a PE lesson with a coach from Kidderminster Harriers and despite the heat did a fantastic job at developing their football skills.

On Thursday we had our final transition session in Skylarks and Wrens are looking forward to a fun-filled last week of term.

This week in English, the children have been working hard on writing their letters to the King, requesting that he lifts the ban on the darkness. It has been lovely to see the children applying all of the writing skills and linguistic features that we have learnt throughout this half term.

In maths, we have had lots of practice telling the time. The children have worked on telling the time to the hour, half past, quarter past, quarter to and five-minute intervals past and to the hour. Any extra practice telling the time at home would really benefit your child, as this is a skill that will become more secure with regular practice.

In science this week, the children enjoyed a hands-on lesson using plasticine to create either an animal or a human. They then labelled the different body parts and explained which body part was connected to each of the five senses. Some children even went a step further by creating internal organs and explaining the important jobs that they do within the body.

In art, the children reviewed the fish sculptures they began making last week. They either added more Mod Roc to strengthen and reinforce their sculptures or, if they were ready, began painting on the scales and other decorative details.

Please could you send your child to school with a strong carrier bag next week, as at some point they will be bringing home their books and other belongings from the classroom.

This week in English, the children have been reflecting on the fantastic progress they have made throughout the year by revisiting their writing and choosing their favourite piece to improve. They have been applying all the writing skills and knowledge they have developed this year to edit and enhance their work, demonstrating just how much they have grown as writers.

In maths, we have begun our new topic of shape, focusing on angles. The children have learned to identify and correctly name acute, obtuse and right angles and have shown great confidence in spotting these in a variety of contexts. They have also explored quadrilaterals, learning about the different shapes within this category and using their understanding of angles to help identify and compare them.

In history, we have continued our learning about the Ancient Maya and discovered the significant role cacao beans played in their civilisation. Known as a ‘gift of the gods’, cacao beans were highly valued and were used in trade, farming, taxation and religious ceremonies, helping us to understand their importance in Maya daily life.

Please could the children bring their PE kits to school on Monday next week and keep them in school until Thursday. Due to the weather, we want to try and take advantage of any cooler days in order to get outside, so PE might not be on the usual day.

This week in English, we have been developing our descriptive writing by creating detailed setting descriptions inspired by the illustrations in our class text. The children worked hard to use ambitious vocabulary and carefully chosen descriptive language to bring each setting to life. Towards the end of the week, we began planning our own setting narratives. As part of this process, the children have been thinking carefully about the different elements of a setting, including the background, middle ground and foreground, as well as considering how to introduce and develop a significant character within their story.

In maths, we have been exploring angles. The children have learnt how to calculate missing angles on a straight line and around a point, using their knowledge that angles on a straight line total 180° and angles around a point total 360°. They have been applying these facts to solve a range of reasoning and problem-solving questions.

In history, we have been developing our historical enquiry skills by interpreting a range of historical sources. The children have also considered why different people may interpret the same source in different ways, discussing how factors such as a person’s background, beliefs and experiences can influence their interpretation of historical evidence.
