What an exciting and full week we've had at Abberley. Our Year 4 pupils have just returned from their residential, and I cannot speak highly enough of their experience. Not only did they develop impressive skills in film creating, editing, science and presenting, enhancing their computing and science knowledge, but they were absolutely outstanding ambassadors for our school. The positive feedback we received about their politeness was truly heartwarming. It's moments like these that remind me how proud we should be of our pupils.
I'd also like to extend a warm thank you to the parents who attended our first parent workshop today. The initial feedback has been extremely positive, and we're already looking forward to developing these opportunities further next academic year. It's wonderful to see such strong engagement from our families.
This week has also seen some fantastic achievements across Key Stage 2. Our Year 5 and 6 pupils have been completing their bikeability lessons, and we're hopeful that the weather will remain dry enough for them to put their newly learnt skills into practice. Alongside this, we've welcomed the start of our Kidderminster Harriers Health Kick lessons for Years 5 and 6. I'd encourage families to work together to complete the health kick challenge – it's a brilliant opportunity to engage in healthy activities as a family. Please do remember to bring your completed record back into school in a few weeks' time.
I was delighted to see the generous donation of outdoor seating being put to such good use this week. During lunchtime on Thursday, I walked out onto the veranda and heard the loveliest sound of girls singing together on the new seats. Let's hope for some warmer and drier days ahead so we can make the most of this wonderful space!

As we head into another busy week, please remember that on Monday your child may be coming home after their first transition visit to their new classroom and teacher for September. Do check the previous newsletter for more information about transition changes this year.
We also have Year 6 bell boating on Tuesday, Year 5's masterclass on Thursday, and our Abberley Choir performing at the three countries showground on Friday.
Have an enjoyable weekend.

A message from Children’s Services Systems, Worcestershire County Council
Cases of measles are rising in our area
Here's some helpful advice from our Public Health colleagues on what you need to know.
- Measles spreads very easily. In some cases, it can make you very ill and lead to serious health problems if it spreads to other parts of the body, such as the lungs or brain.
- Check the list of symptoms below to know what to look out for. If you think you or your child may have measles or any of the symptoms, call your GP surgery or NHS 111 first, before turning up at a healthcare setting. This will help to stop the virus from spreading.
- Having the MMRV or MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent yourself from becoming very ill.
Ask at your GP surgery if you're not sure you or your child has had either of these vaccines. Your GP can vaccinate you for free on the NHS.
If any school aged children have missed their MMR vaccination or any vaccination given at school, parents can contact the Vaccination Team who will help arrange for the missed vaccinations to be given: 01905 390030.
For more information on the symptoms, vaccination, and what to do if you think you have measles or have come into contact with someone who has measles, please visit: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/measles/

It was lovely to welcome the children back after their half term holiday on Monday and hear all about their adventures. They did a great job of writing their holiday news.
We were very excited to see our butterflies had hatched out of their cocoons over the half term holiday. They spent a few days in the classroom being fed fruit and sugar water so we could observe them before we set them free at Forest School.
On Tuesday we had a big surprise as we found a large selection of pants blowing around the playground. Nobody knew how they had got there although they were covered in some mysterious purple glitter. We decided that maybe they had come from space and belonged to some aliens! Year 3 joined us for the day and we had great fun taking part in lots of space and pants themed activities (please see the news article for more details). We even took part in a pants themed treasure hunt at Forest School in the afternoon. It turned out on Wednesday that our suspicions were right as the aliens visited again and left us the book "Aliens in underpants". We will be keeping a sharp eye out for the aliens over the next few weeks. Please let us know if you see them or experience any instances of missing pants!
In maths this week we have been exploring the properties of 3D (solid) shapes and identifying them in the environment. Maybe you can have a look to see how many different 3D shapes you can find at home.

In English this week, we started our new book, The King Who Banned the Dark. Before reading the story, the children made predictions using a range of clues, including a torch, a banned sign, a crown, a newspaper and some fireworks. We then read part of the story and explored the vocabulary used, discussing the meanings of new and unfamiliar words. The children also learned that they will be writing a persuasive letter to the king to convince him not to ban the dark, and we looked at some of the vocabulary the king had used in his own letter. Towards the end of the week, the children took part in a role-play activity. The class was split into two teams: one in favour of banning the dark and one against it. They worked together to compile reasons and arguments to persuade the king to support their point of view.
In maths this week, we continued our unit on money. We began the week by counting pounds and pence combined before moving on to selecting the correct coins and notes to create given totals. This has taken a lot of practice for some children, so any additional opportunities to practise at home using real coins and notes would be greatly beneficial. We finished the week by exploring different ways to make £1, with the children finding as many combinations of coins as possible to create this amount.
In science this week, the children explored what makes a tree different from other plants. They learned that trees have a trunk and bark rather than just a stem. The children then went outside to do some bark rubbings and investigate how the bark differs between different types of trees.
In D.T this week, the children finished making their Ferris wheels and completed evaluations of their final products. They have all done an excellent job, and the finished Ferris wheels looked fantastic!
In art this week, we started our new topic of Expressionism. The children explored how this style differs from other forms of art before looking at artwork by Kandinsky. They then experimented with a range of tools to create their own expressionist artwork using paint.
Looking ahead to the next couple of weeks, Year 1s will be completing their Phonics Screening Check. Please ensure your child is practising their sounds and reading regularly at home so that they feel confident and secure going into the coming weeks.

As you will have seen from the news stories, Y4 have had a fantastic few days at Folly Farm! They worked really hard to create their wildlife films and were thrilled to be able to show them to the rest of the school in collective worship on Wednesday. We are very proud of how well the children worked together and how amazingly they represented the school while they were away.
While Year 4's were away, Year 3's completed the following learning:
English - After watching the animation, 'Pigeon Impossible', we discussed new missions for Walter - the special agent. We wrote about a new mission or retold the mission watched.
Maths - We looked at how a.m. and p.m. are used when telling the time. We thought about different activities that could be completed in a day and identified if they would be done during the morning, the afternoon/evening, or both.
Science - During the afternoon, we looked at evaporation and how water is changing from a liquid to a gas. Using water, we painted a picture on the school playground and observed how it gradually disappeared from view.
This half term, those children who were swimming last half term will continue to do so on Wednesday mornings.
Those that aren't swimming, will have outdoor PE on Wednesday mornings so will need appropriate PE kit.

This week, Year 6 pupils have continued to produce some fantastic, high-quality writing for their end-of-year assessments. We are now nearing the end of our evidence collection, and I am confident that all of their hard work and determination will pay off.
In English this week, the children have been writing setting descriptions with a horror theme. They have gone into great detail describing their arrival at a haunted mansion and the strange and unsettling events that followed. The quality of vocabulary and descriptive language used has been particularly impressive.
In Maths, we have started our new topic of algebra. The children have begun by exploring function machines and learning how to form algebraic expressions. Next week, we will build on this knowledge by introducing formulas and substitution.
In History, we started our new topic on the Sikh Empire. This week, we learned about how the Sikh Empire was formed, exploring the twelve independent misls that existed across the Punjab and how one leader brought them together to create a united and powerful empire.
We have also concluded our DT unit on automata toys. The children have put the finishing touches to their creations and should be very proud of the effort and creativity they have shown throughout the project. Next week, we will begin our final Art topic of the year.
Reminder: PE days will now be on a Monday and Wednesday. Outdoor learning clothes on a Monday.

We hope you all had a lovely half-term! In preparation for the new academic year in September, the Friends Association will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 24th June 2026. The meeting will take place at 3.20pm in Kestrels classroom with refreshments and childcare provided and will last approximately 1 hour.
This meeting will provide an opportunity to reflect on the 25/26 year and plan for the year ahead. At this meeting all committee roles (Chair, Treasurer and Secretary) will become available for a September start to enable a smooth handover, so if you are interested in putting yourself forward for any of these positions, please email Bryan (current chair) at friends@abberley.org. If more than one nomination is received for any of the roles, a vote at AGM will determine the outcome, unless a job share arrangement is agreed between candidates, and this should be made explicit in the nomination email. All nominations must be received before close Tuesday 23rd June. If you’d like to chat about what any of the roles entails before applying please have a chat with Bryan.
Abberley Friends works tirelessly to support our school, with funds raised invested directly into enriching our children’s primary school experience, so it's a massively important group that needs your help, so please do get involved.
Thanks.
