In Collective Worship at the moment we are exploring

British Values; Tolerance

Congratulations to Year 6 on their exceptional performance during SATs this week. The pupils demonstrated excellent focus, resilience and determination throughout the assessments, and I am immensely proud of them.  To celebrate this milestone, Year 6 are enjoying a well-deserved fun afternoon on Monday in our wildlife area around the fire pit, where they will be toasting marshmallows and making memories together. Also, letters have come home today inviting our Year 6 pupils for a day of bell boating on the River Severn in Worcester.

This week, our 'happy lunchtime' activity showed fantastic teamwork. Children were challenged  to create the largest stain glass window they could using only chalks and tape, and the collaborative spirit, creativity and teamwork on display was truly lovely to see. Sadly, the British weather had other ideas, and we experienced rain for the following two lunchtimes, but the children's enthusiasm and positive attitudes remained undimmed!

I am also delighted to share news about a wonderful charitable initiative. Reverend David is taking a sabbatical later in the year, during which he will be undertaking a sponsored bike ride from Cardiff Bay to Colwyn Bay – an impressive 350 kilometres! He very kindly asked our pupils to choose the charity he would be raising money for. The children's choice was inspired and thoughtful: as it is David Attenborough's 100th birthday this year, they have decided to support a wildlife charity. We felt it would be particularly meaningful to keep this local, and so we are proposing Worcester Wildlife Trust as our chosen charity. This feels fitting for our school and our beautiful Worcestershire environment.

Lost Property

The lost property bin was sorted at the end of last week and there were 43 pieces of clothing; 4 items were named, so we were able to reunite the item with its owner, but 39 items were either unnamed or had the name of a child who is no longer at this school.

We love selling you items of uniform from our recycled uniform shop but PLEASE rename it with your child's name so we can return it when it is misplaced.

All items have now been washed and either placed in our shop or given to the Acorns Hospice charity shop.

Wrens

Well, our caterpillars certainly are not tiny anymore.  We have had to think of lots of new adjectives to describe them and the children remembered the word "massive" from our work on Jack and the Beanstalk.  We have been enjoying using our imaginations to create some adventures for the caterpillar and the butterfly from our "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" book in Drawing Club.

In maths we have been exploring number bonds to 10 this week and playing lots of games to practise recalling the pairs of numbers which add up to 10.  We discovered our fingers are very useful for helping us with this!   We have also been exploring strategies for counting larger groups of objects including putting them in groups and moving or crossing out each object as you count it.  The children particularly enjoyed practising this strategy on some spot and count pictures.

In RE we have been exploring the Christian story of Creation and wrote our own Thank You prayers.  We also looked at different ways people thank God for our wonderful world.

Next week is phonics assessment week so there will be no new phonics homework this week.  Instead please take the time to revisit the learning we have covered this half term with your child.  In particular we have learnt a lot of new tricky words in phase 4 so it would really benefit your child if you could practise these at home.  Thank you!

Skylarks

This week in English, the children have been working on their planning for their explanation text. This is an important process so that next week, when they come to write their final piece, they have all of their ideas gathered and are including the features that we have already discussed in class. The children have also had lots of practice with their phonics sounds this week, with the Phonics Screening Check coming up over the next month or so. Any extra practice and reading at home with Year 1 children would be very beneficial, please.

In maths, we completed our unit on statistics. At the start of the week, the children were learning how to use tally charts to record data, as well as tables with totals in them. They then took this learning further by interpreting and drawing bar charts. The children have really understood this concept and have enjoyed collecting their own data during class activities, such as finding out what pets the children have or their favourite colours. We ended the week by looking at pictograms. The children interpreted different pictograms and drew their own. Year 1 children completed pictograms using a one picture to one scale, while Year 2 children challenged themselves further by using different scales and applying their times table knowledge.

In geography, the children wrote postcards as if they were visiting somewhere in China, such as the Great Wall of China, Sanya Beach or the Huangshan Mountains. They also worked in pairs using enlarged photographs of locations in China, where they identified both the human and physical features they could see.

In RE this week, the children learned about the meaning of Hanukkah and the story behind it. They discussed why this story is important for Jewish people to remember and celebrate.

In D.T. we started our next unit of designing and making a Ferris wheel. We looked at how mechanisms work such as wheels and axles before the children started to design their own Ferris wheel. For DT next week, please can your child bring a cereal box or a plastic milk bottle etc for the base of their Ferris wheel.

Thursday: PE kits - please can those with longer hair have their hair tied up ready

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the orange phonics book. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Kestrels

This week in English, the children have continued exploring the illustrations from the book The Journey to help them infer how the characters may have been feeling at different points in the story. We discussed how facial expressions, body language and the setting can provide clues about emotions and thoughts. Using these ideas, the children wrote thoughtful sentences from the mother’s point of view, carefully choosing vocabulary to convey feelings such as fear, worry, hope and determination.

In maths, we have continued our work on time. The children practised converting analogue times into digital times and showed much more confidence with this skill. We also worked on calculating durations of time using hours, days, months and years. As mentioned last week, any additional practice at home with telling the time would be extremely beneficial. This is a skill that requires regular repetition and reinforcement in order for children to become fully secure and confident when reading both analogue and digital clocks.

In geography, the children investigated where some of their favourite foods come from around the world and explored the journeys these foods take before reaching our shops and homes. We looked at maps to identify countries of origin and discussed the concept of “food miles.” The children thought carefully about the environmental impact of transporting food over long distances and shared ideas about how we could help reduce this impact, such as buying locally grown produce, reducing waste and choosing seasonal foods where possible.

In science, we learned all about the water cycle and the important processes involved, including evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. The children then applied their understanding creatively by producing comic strips about “Walter the Water Droplet.” They followed Walter’s journey through the water cycle and used accurate scientific vocabulary to explain each stage. The children enjoyed combining their scientific knowledge with their creativity.

Merlins

This week has been an important one for our Year 6 pupils as they completed their SATs. We are incredibly proud of how hard they have worked, not just this week, but throughout the year. Their determination, resilience, and consistently positive attitude have been fantastic to see, and they should be thoroughly commended for their efforts.

Meanwhile, Year 5 have been fully immersed in their “Anywhere Island” project. They have approached this with great enthusiasm, working diligently and gaining a lot from the experience while Year 6 have been completing their assessments.

Alongside this, the children enjoyed taking part in play rehearsals. These have provided a welcome opportunity for creativity and a chance to unwind a little from their hard work, and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and confidence grow.

In Geography this week, pupils have taken on the role of consultants, creating presentations for an urban planner seeking ideas for a new village. They demonstrated excellent creativity and critical thinking, proposing a range of energy sources, and thoughtfully considering the benefits and drawbacks of each.

In Outdoor Learning this week, activities completed included creating a piece of artwork using resources around us to create a class exhibition and devising clues to be used in a scavenger hunt for younger pupils to complete when in the Outdoor learning area.  With a partner, we used our maths knowledge and problem solving skills to find a solution to the hex path challenge.
