In Collective Worship at the moment we are exploring

spirituality

It has been lovely welcoming everyone back to school after the Easter break. The week has brought some welcome glimpses of sunshine, and it has been wonderful to see the children making the most of their time outdoors. Many have enjoyed playing on the school field and exploring the bank in our wildlife area, where they have been busy building shelters during break times.

In school this week, Merlins have enjoyed taking their learning outside. We hope that, as the term progresses, they will continue to benefit from many more sunny Monday afternoons in the wildlife area. A gentle reminder to please ensure that children bring appropriate outdoor clothing every Monday throughout the summer term. Please do take a look at the photos below to see some of their activities.

On Thursday, our Reception children had a fantastic time taking part in the Tiny Olympics event at the Chantry. It was a joyful and energetic occasion, and the children represented the school brilliantly.

We were also delighted to welcome Worcestershire Cricket Club into school this week. They will be working with Merlins to develop their cricket skills, and we are pleased to share that they are also offering an after-school club. If your child is interested in attending cricket club on Thursdays, please sign up via the online system on Arbor if you have not already done so.

Looking ahead to next week, our swimming sessions will begin on Wednesday. If you have any questions regarding swimming arrangements, please do not hesitate to speak with Mrs Lightfoot.

We also have two football tournaments taking place after school next week for our Year 3 & 4 team and our KS2 Girls team. We wish all of the children the very best of luck and thank Mrs Lightfoot for her dedication in preparing the teams, including the lunchtime coaching sessions she has been running over the past few weeks.

Have a super weekend.

It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school after the Easter break and hear all about their adventures over the holidays.

We have enjoyed starting our new topic "Green and growing".  This week we have been focussing on the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk" in Drawing Club and the children imagined some very inventive traps to help Jack catch the giant.

In science we have begun to explore plants and learn the names and functions of the different parts of a plant.

In phonics we have moved onto Phase 4 words which covers words including consonant digraphs, for example tent or bump.  We have also started learning the phase 4 tricky words.  Please continue to support your child to practise these at home.

In maths we are starting to the explore the composition of 9 and 10 and consolidate our knowledge of ordering numbers and quantities.

We had a wonderful morning on Thursday at the Mini Olympics at The Chantry.  Please see the news article for more information and photographs.

From next week we will be introducing "Show and Tell" on a Thursday. This is an opportunity for your child to bring in a special item to share with the class.  This item should be something the child has made, a memento of a special event or trip or something related to a hobby as opposed to toys please.  Please ensure all items are handed to a member of staff in the morning so we can make sure we plan enough time for the session.  Thank you!

Skylarks

This week in English, we have been working hard on planning our circular narratives. The children created their own characters and decided where they live. They then carefully planned a journey for their character, choosing three different locations that they would visit along the way. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and imagination developing as they begin to structure their stories.

In maths this week, we have continued our work on multiplication and division. We began by making arrays to help us understand how numbers can be grouped. The children then practised writing multiplication number sentences, including their related switchers. They also wrote repeated addition number sentences to match these. Towards the end of the week, we introduced division by grouping.

In science, the children learnt about the diets of animals and explored the differences between omnivores, carnivores and herbivores. We also recapped the main body parts and carried out investigations linked to our senses, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

In RE this week, the children experienced our own version of a Shabbat dinner. They really enjoyed taking part in this and it helped to bring their learning to life. Please see the news article for more information.

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the orange phonics book. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Kestrels

It has been lovely to welcome the children back this week, fully rested and keen to learn!

In English, the children have been writing detailed setting narratives inspired by a chosen book illustration, working hard to incorporate all the writer’s knowledge and techniques we have explored over the past few weeks.

In maths, we have continued our work on fractions, focusing on mixed numbers and improper fractions and learning how to confidently convert between the two - strong times tables knowledge has really supported their understanding here.

In geography, we launched our new topic, Where Does Our Food Come From?, beginning with exploring where different foods are grown around the world. This sparked thoughtful discussions about food miles, ways we can reduce them and factors contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

In art, we introduced the work of Henri Matisse, with the children creating informative fact pages about his life and distinctive artistic style.

Merlins

In English, the children have been exploring a range of grammatical topics linked to the spelling, punctuation and grammar curriculum. This week, our focus has included expanded noun phrases, modal verbs, the correct use of inverted commas, fronted adverbials, the appropriate use of apostrophes and pronouns, amongst other areas. The children have worked hard to apply these skills in their writing and are becoming increasingly confident in their use.

In maths, we have been learning about ratio and how it links closely to our understanding of fractions. The children have been using this knowledge to calculate proportions of given amounts. We have also explored scale factor, where the children have practised enlarging shapes using specific scale factors.

In geography, we began our new unit, Where does energy come from? This week, the children mapped trading routes for different types of energy and explored various energy sources found around the world. They also organised these energy sources on a timeline, from the oldest to the most recent.

In PE, we have started our rounders unit and the children have been developing their batting and fielding skills. We were also fortunate to have a cricket coach visit us this week, giving the children an exciting opportunity to learn and practise cricket skills.

In DT, we introduced our new topic on automata toys. The children have begun exploring how these mechanical toys work and will soon move on to designing and creating their very own wooden automata toy.

We looked at stained glass windows in RE this week and created a design of our own.

In outdoor learning, we continued to explore the outdoor learning area, completing activities including sketching patterns around us in nature, creating a classification key for different plants and naming different plants.
