Easter

This week has been filled with awards, celebrations, and memorable events across the school.

A huge congratulations to Abberley Pre-School, who are the proud winners of the Worcester Education Awards 2026 ‘Early Years Education’. This is a wonderful achievement, and we are incredibly proud of Tara and her dedicated team. We look forward to continuing our close partnership with pre-school, ensuring smooth transitions between Pre-School and ‘Big School’.

We are also delighted to share that Abberley School has been awarded a Music Mark in recognition of our dedication to and improvement in music education. Well done to Mrs Mitchell, who has been instrumental in driving this success.

Yesterday, we enjoyed a truly special day of Easter celebrations. The morning began with our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children showcasing their creativity in a colourful bonnet parade, followed by singing, poetry, and Easter-themed maths performances. In the afternoon, Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 led a beautiful Easter service at the church. A special well done to Years 3 and 4 for reading the Easter story so eloquently, and to all of Key Stage 2 for their wonderful singing of Easter hymns.

This evening, we rounded off our celebrations with a fun-filled Easter Egg Hunt around the school grounds, with clues leading to a chocolate treat. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported these events, and a special thanks to the Friends for organising such an enjoyable hunt tonight.

We are also grateful to the Ballard family for kindly giving our school chickens a home over the holidays.

Please look out for the Abberley Acorns Activity Programme email and remember you need to book using the Arbor Payment App.

Note for Merlins Class: You will need to bring outdoor learning clothes to change into on MONDAY 13th APRIL (1st day back) .

As we come to the end of another busy and successful term, I would like to wish you all a very happy Easter and a restful holiday.

Claire Shelley  Headteacher

Attendance

We are really pleased to share some fantastic attendance achievements with you.

Since 1st September, 59 of our pupils (58%) have maintained ‘good’ attendance, meaning they have attended school between 96% and 100% of the time—an excellent effort!

A special congratulations goes to the 8 pupils who have achieved an outstanding 100% attendance since the start of the academic year. This is a wonderful accomplishment and something to be very proud of.

We are also delighted that 60 pupils (59%) achieved a ‘good’ attendance rating over the Spring term. This shows a strong and consistent commitment to learning across the school.

Thank you for your continued support in helping your children attend school regularly—it really does make a difference.

Wrens

Thank you for coming to support our Easter celebration yesterday and for all the amazing Easter bonnets.  The children looked fantastic and sang and spoke beautifully, we were very proud of them all.

This week Wrens has been full of all things Easter.  The children have enjoyed some lovely Easter crafts and leant more about the significance of the Easter story to Christians. We had great fun during outdoor learning taking part in our Easter bunny training camp -  please see the news article for more details and photographs.

A highlight of the week was meeting the spring lambs from Bertie's farm. They were very cute!

The children have also been undertaking their phonics assessments this week and it has been lovely to see the progress they have made.  They will not be bringing home reading books over the holidays as we will be restructuring the reading groups following the assessments.  However, they will still have a library book to enjoy over the holidays.

We hope you all have a very happy and restful Easter holiday and we look forward to welcoming the children back for the summer term in a couple of weeks.

Skylarks

This week has been assessment week. The children have completed assessments in English and maths, including reading. They have all worked extremely hard and have done well. The children should be very proud of the effort and focus they showed throughout the week.

Alongside the assessments in maths this week, we have also continued our multiplication and division unit. The children started by recognising and making equal groups before moving on to adding equal groups together. For example, having 3 bags of apples with 5 apples in each bag, which can be represented as 5+5+5. In Year 2, the children recognised that this can also be written as 5 × 3. By the end of the week, the children were making arrays and writing the correct multiplication calculations to match them.

We hope that you enjoyed the Key Stage 1 Easter service yesterday. The children have been working really hard learning the lyrics of the songs, which were rather wordy, as well as practising their parts in the poems and rhymes. They did a wonderful job and their Easter bonnets were fabulous!

Have a great Easter break!

Kestrels

This week, the children have been completing their end-of-term assessments in both reading and maths. They approached these with great focus and determination and it has been a valuable opportunity for them to demonstrate all the knowledge and skills they have developed over the term.

On Wednesday, we had a fantastic Design and Technology day. The children worked collaboratively in teams to select a design and construct their own pavilions, carefully following a given brief. They explored and applied a range of strengthening techniques to ensure their structures were stable, secure and fit for purpose. It was wonderful to see such effective teamwork, problem-solving and creativity, with all groups showing perseverance as they refined and improved their designs.

It was also a real highlight to see so many of the Kestrels confidently taking part in our Easter service at church. Their willingness to read aloud in front of an audience demonstrated both their enthusiasm for reading and their growing confidence.

Finally, please note that there will be no homework set over the holidays. We hope you all have a restful and enjoyable break.

Merlins

In English, we’ve begun revisiting key aspects of the grammar, punctuation and spelling curriculum. We started the week by focusing on word classes and basic punctuation, helping to reinforce those core skills that underpin all of their writing.

In maths, we’ve been exploring volume as part of our wider work on area and perimeter. The children have been developing their understanding of how we measure and calculate space within 3D shapes.

In history, we’ve been learning about Ancient Greece. The children explored influential Greek philosophers and how their ideas have shaped the world we live in today. We also looked at important Greek legacies, including art, architecture and the Olympic Games. To finish the topic, the children created their own non-chronological reports to showcase what they’ve learned.

This week in science, we looked at classification keys and how they can be used to identify different animals based on their characteristics. We then spent time in the Outdoor Learning area and the school field looking for different invertebrates.

In this week's RE lesson, we looked inside a Cathedral, discussing different features such as stained glass windows. We thought about how Cathedrals reflect upon Christians ideas about God.

In computing, we continued to think about RFID and how it can be used in settings such as Theme Parks to analyze data. After inputting data on an Excel spreadsheet, we created bar charts to visually show which rides had the longest wait time.

This week has also been assessment week. The children completed both reading and maths assessments, which will help us measure the progress they’ve made since the autumn term and identify any areas where they may need further support.
