In Collective Worship at the moment we are exploring

behaviour boost with a focus on respect

It has been a real pleasure this week to see so many of our pupils actively thinking about what it means to show respect for themselves, for others and for our environment. Around school, I have noticed countless small but meaningful acts: polite “please” and “thank yous”, doors being held open for friends, adults and visitors and children taking pride in looking after their classrooms and shared spaces. These everyday actions reflect the values we want to see embedded across our school community and I hope this focused reminder will help ensure these positive habits continue to flourish.

I would also like to take this opportunity to highlight how we value and respond to feedback from our parent community. Several parents asked for greater notice of key dates and events. In response, our online calendar now includes all major events for the entire academic year, rather than just one term at a time. Please do continue to check the weekly newsletter as this remains the most up-to-date source of information.

We also listened to concerns about Parents’ Evening booking times being released during the school day, which disadvantaged working parents. Following this feedback, the upcoming Parents’ Evening booking system will go live at 6:00pm on Friday 13th February and remain open until 10:00pm on Monday 2nd March via the Arbor Parents App, allowing everyone a fairer opportunity to secure a suitable appointment time.

In addition, we have responded to requests regarding payment options and all parents now have access to an online payment system for added convenience.

Regarding school meals, our Governors have been visiting school on random days over the past term to monitor and sample the lunches provided. Their findings confirmed that the overall quality of food is acceptable and we will continue to review provision to ensure standards remain high.

Finally, I recognise that transition can be an anxious time for some children, particularly those who have spent two years with the same teacher and in the same classroom. To support this, from the summer term onwards we will be increasing opportunities for pupils to spend more time with their new teacher and in their new classroom environment, rather than the one and a half days offered in previous years. We hope this extended transition will help pupils feel more confident, prepared and excited for the year ahead.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support in working together to help our children grow and flourish. I wish you all a 'dry' half term and look forward to welcoming everyone back into school on Monday 23rd February.

Claire Shelley   Headteacher

On Monday, the Merlins class had great fun investigating water resistance and friction. The pupils explored how water resistance is a type of frictional force and discussed how it affects objects moving through water. They carried out experiments to discover which shapes had the greatest and leas...

Wrens

This week Wrens have been celebrating Valentine's Day and have been thinking about love, kindness and respect.  We have enjoyed some lovely heart shaped artwork activities, been creating Valentine's Day treats in the role play and play dough area and using our writing skills to create some cards.

In maths this week we have been exploring 2D shapes. We investigated their different properties and enjoyed a 2D shape hunt around school. It was amazing how many we found! Perhaps you could try this at home. We'd love to see your photos.

In phonics we have been undertaking our half termly assessments. The children did really well recalling the phase 3 digraphs and trigraphs and blending words containing these sounds. Next half term we will be continuing to consolidate this knowledge and the first sheet for next half term's learning is in your child's orange book. There are no reading books over half term as we are currently restructuring our reading groups following the assessments.

In PSHE today we revisited the goals we had set ourselves earlier in the term. All the children had made progress against their goals and in some cases achieved them. They were rightly very proud of their achievements.

Finally on a housekeeping note, please could you check whether your child has borrowed any of our spare clothes (particularly jumpers and socks/tights) over the last few weeks as our supplies have become somewhat depleted! Thank you!

I hope you all have a lovely half term and it finally stops raining. Your child will be bringing home a "Proud Peacock" sheet in their book bag as we would love to hear all about their adventures!

Skylarks

This week in English, the children have been stepping into the role of Hermelin the Detective Mouse to write a letter. They have planned and written the first two parts of their letter as Hermelin to Mrs Mattison to help her find her missing handbag. The children have done well and have been confidently using new vocabulary and techniques that we have recently learned.

In maths this week, the children have been learning how to add across a ten and subtract to a ten. These important strategies are helping them build strong foundations to start to solve calculations using a more mental method.

In geography, the children pulled together everything we have been learning about hot and cold climates. They then used this knowledge to decide whether they would prefer to live in a hot place or a cold place. They justified their choices using the knowledge and key words learnt during this topic.

After half term, PE will still be on a Tuesday and Thursday. However, Outdoor Learning will now be on a Wednesday. Please ensure your child brings appropriate clothing on this day.

Have a great half term!

Timetable

Tuesday & Thursday: PE kits - please can those with longer hair have their hair tied up ready

Wednesday: Wellies and appropriate clothing for outdoor learning

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the orange phonics book. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Kestrels

This week in English, we began our new book, ‘The Rhythm of the Rain’ by Grahame Baker-Smith. The children explored the beautiful illustrations and made thoughtful predictions about what the story might be about, showing imagination and inference skills. They also wrote short kenning poems inspired by one of the illustrations, using creative language to capture its mood and meaning.

In maths, we moved on to our new topic, measurement, focusing on metres, centimetres and millimetres and practising how to read these accurately on a ruler. The children confidently applied their prior knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 to help them convert between units.

In art, the children added the finishing touches to their “dropped ice cream” sculptures, carefully using their original designs to include final details – the finished pieces look fantastic and they should be very proud of their hard work.

In PE, Kestrels completed their final gymnastics session with Annie, combining everything they have learned over the past five weeks to perform a circuit that showcased their improved technique and skills. They have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and have made great progress.

There will be no homework over half term. The children are encouraged to keep on reading daily and should try and complete their reading record book.

Timetable

Every day: Reading book and reading records

Tuesday: Outdoor PE kit

Thursday: Indoor PE kit

Friday: Reading record books marked

Merlins

In maths, we have continued our learning on decimals. This week, the focus has been on rounding decimals to the nearest whole number, the nearest one decimal place and the nearest two decimal places. The children have shown great perseverance as they tackled increasingly challenging questions.

In DT, we reflected on our playground designs, considering how well they met the design criteria and completed our end-of-unit assessments. It was fantastic to see how thoughtfully the children evaluated their work and suggested improvements.

Geography has been a very busy subject this week. The children completed their persuasive speeches about how humans use the desert, then wrote letters to a family planning to move there, explaining both the benefits and challenges they might experience. We finished the week by comparing the desert to Abberley and discussing whether it would be somewhere we would personally choose to live, based on everything we have learned.

This week, Year 6 have been completing a series of assessments. These have provided us with very useful information that will help us plan and deliver any supportive interventions that may be needed in the lead-up to the SATs tests in May. The children have all worked incredibly hard and I am very proud of the determination they have shown to complete each test to the very best of their ability.

In science, we investigated friction testing a variety of different shoe types to find the grippiest shoe.  We also looked at water resistance by looking at the body shapes of different animals that live in water. We created different shapes to test in water to see which sunk the quickest.

In the French lesson, we started to think about planning a holiday to France including key information such as the dates of travel, how to travel to France and what to pack in our suitcase.

Thank you for all your support this half term. We hope you have a restful and enjoyable break and we look forward to welcoming the children back afterwards.
