The theme for this weeks Collective Worship is

Anti-bullying Week
...the kindness challenge

This week has been all about thinking of others as we celebrated both Children in Need and Anti-Bullying Week. Despite the soggy weather, our 'Exercisethon challenge' was a tremendous success. The school was buzzing with energy as pupils enjoyed disco dancing, fitness circuits and Joe Wicks HIIT sessions. Bright colours, bold stripes and cheerful spots filled the corridors, creating a wonderfully joyful atmosphere.

Congratulations to our Pudsey Raffle winners: Billie, Ayda and Eleana.

To mark National Anti-Bullying Week, our KS2 Safety Group led a thoughtful and engaging assembly focused on kindness. They explored the difference between bullying and unkind behaviour, using a creative squirty-cream demonstration to show how our words and actions, once shared, cannot be taken back.
With this year’s theme, Power for Good: we all have the power to make a positive difference. Every kind word, every act of courage, and every moment of empathy helps build a world where kindness wins. The KS2 Safety and Well-Being Groups have set whole-school challenges to encourage kindness in every classroom. Pupils are encouraged to use kind words and kind actions every day, and each class has received kindness speech bubbles to record and celebrate positive acts.

Notices

  • Please ensure children bring a warm, waterproof coat to school. We continue to use our outdoor spaces at break time, even in light rain, and colder weather is expected next week.

  • KS2 pupils should remember to bring their reading journal and school reading book every day.

Wishing everyone a cosy, warm weekend and let’s hope for fewer puddles next week!

Wrens

This week the Wrens have been exploring Remembrance.  We learnt a little bit about the First World War using the "Where the poppies now grow" series of books by Hilary Robinson.  The books talk about the role of different people and animals in the war in an age of appropriate way.  We were very proud of how the children conducted themselves in the Remembrance Service at church on Tuesday. They showed great respect throughout the service.  In art we looked at the artist Scarlett Raven and started creating our own pieces of poppy artwork based on her work.

In maths we have been consolidating our knowledge of numbers 1 to 5 by exploring their composition and practising how to write the numerals.

We have also started practising our nativity play "Baarmy Bethlehem."  The children are very enthusiastic about learning their songs and lines.

On Friday we are looking forward to celebrating Children in Need.  We can't wait to see all the children in their spots and stripes!

Skylarks

This week in English, we have finished our work on the book Old Bear. The children planned the endings to their stories before writing them up in full, showing lots of creativity and imagination. We then moved on to exploring clues about our next book! The clues included binoculars, a magnifying glass, envelopes, a map, an encyclopedia and even a cheese packet! The children worked together to make predictions about what our new story might be about.

In maths, we have been learning all about doubles. The children have really enjoyed exploring doubles and using this knowledge to solve near-doubles calculations efficiently. We have also been adding three one-digit numbers together, finding different strategies to make this easier, for example, spotting doubles or using known number bonds.

In art, we started our new topic on printmaking. We looked at the work of artists Angie Lewin and William Morris, using their beautiful prints as inspiration to create our own sketches. The children really enjoyed studying the patterns and details in these artists’ work and produced some lovely initial drawings.

At the start of the week, Skylarks also visited Wrens to share their Moving Humpty Dumpty Books. They read their stories to the younger children, showing how their moving picture mechanisms worked. Both classes really enjoyed this experience. It was a fantastic opportunity for the Skylarks to receive feedback and evaluate their finished products.

In history, we have been learning about what history actually is and that events happen in an order. The children began by sequencing pictures from a typical day, using the correct time-related language to describe such as before and after. They then created simple timelines of their own lives, choosing four key events to include: themselves as a baby, their first day of school, themselves now and their favourite memory.

For our next history lesson (Wednesday), please send your child to school with a photo of them on holiday. The photo could be a holiday where they have travelled to a different place, e.g. Italy or a photo of them on holiday from school and at home or out doing something they enjoy. We will photocopy the originals and give them back to you. Thank you!

A reminder that Little Wandle books are due back every Tuesday (including Fluency Group on the weeks they get a book). We are getting less and less books back on time every week. In turn, this means we have many sets of books that we cannot use and therefore your child may not be able to have the next book in the sequence.

Timetable

Monday: Wellies and appropriate clothing for outdoor learning

Tuesday & Thursday: PE kits - please can those with longer hair have their hair tied up ready

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the orange phonics book. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Kestrels

In English, the children spent time studying the illustrations in our text and imagining themselves in the position of the polar bear, thinking carefully about what it might see, feel and experience. They then used this to craft thoughtful and detailed setting descriptions, drawing on their developing writer’s knowledge to enhance their language choices.

In maths, we continued to deepen the children’s understanding of formal subtraction, particularly focusing on methods that involve exchanging. This is an area that can sometimes take a little while to fully get to grips with, so the children spent plenty of time practising their fluency and ensuring they felt secure before moving on to more complex problem-solving activities where they could apply their growing confidence.

In DT, we launched our new topic on mechanical cars. The children began by exploring the history of the car and discussing how designs and mechanisms have changed over time. They then worked collaboratively in small groups to create a prototype car using lollipop sticks and dowelling, giving them a hands-on introduction to simple mechanisms.

In French, we started our new unit on French playground games. To ease into the topic, the children recapped key vocabulary, including counting from one to six, which they will continue to build on throughout the unit.

Please remember to bring in your school instruments on Monday.

Merlins

We’ve had a wonderfully busy week of learning!

In English, we have continued our work on A Story Like the Wind by Gill Lewis. This week, the children began exploring the text more deeply by stepping into the shoes of different characters through role play. They also had a go at writing their own flashback sequences, linking the character’s current situation to memories of happier times. Their creativity and empathy have really shone through.

In maths, we finished our work on multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 and have now moved on to our new topic: fractions. The children have explored equivalent fractions and learned how to simplify fractions to their simplest form.

In art, we continued our study of the vibrant and inspiring work of Frida Kahlo. This week, the children created their own self-portraits in Frida’s distinctive style, using her colour palette and drawing inspiration from the symbolism seen in her paintings. The results have been fantastic!

In history, our new topic explores what the census can tell us about our local area. To begin, we looked at the census taken during the reign of Queen Victoria and used what we learned to create our very own class census. The children were fascinated to see how information is gathered and recorded over time.

Please remember to bring in your school instruments on Monday.
