Love, grow and flourish together

It's been absolutely fantastic to hear all the lovely children's voices filling our school this week. There's nothing quite like that special energy that comes with pupils being back in their classrooms and corridors.

I am particularly delighted to celebrate how brilliantly all of our new pupils are settling into school life. Watching them find their feet and become part of our Abberley family has been truly wonderful. What has made this transition even more special is witnessing the incredible job their new buddies are doing in looking after them. It's been delightful to see these partnerships flourishing. From playing together in the playground to sharing lunchtime conversations, and simply being that reassuring 'big buddy' support that makes all the difference. These moments perfectly capture the caring, nurturing spirit that defines our school community.

Next week we'll be running on our normal timetable, so please do take a moment to read through any specific details relating to your child's class that you'll find below in this newsletter.

I'm particularly thrilled to announce a brilliant new addition to our music curriculum. From next week, all our Key Stage 2 pupils will begin learning to play a musical instrument for this half term within their music lesson. On Monday, pupils will discover which instrument they will be mastering, and for parents there are no costs involved!

A few important notices for your diaries: I'm hopeful that our recent software issues will be resolved by next week, which means our newsletter should be brimming with lovely images of our busy, thriving school environment once again and the calendar will contain all of the important dates for the school year.

Abberley Acorns Activity letter will be coming home on Monday so please book some extra curricular activities for your child.  Abberley Acorns breakfast club and after school care will be operating as normal next week. Please remember the new location is in the mobile classroom.

Finally, our Friends AGM will take place on Tuesday 30th September at 3:30pm in our beautifully refurbished school hall. Everyone is warmly welcomed to attend.

Here's to another wonderful week ahead and fingers crossed technology is back working!

Music lessons are starting up again next week.

Tuesdays - violin lessons and piano lessons
Fridays - guitar lessons

Road closure

You will have seen the yellow sign on the lane outside the school.  The planned road closure will be for one day on 18th September from 8.00am to 5.00pm however this will not affect access to the school or Village Hall carpark from the main road.  School will be open as normal.

Wrens

It has been so lovely to welcome all our new children into Reception this week.  We have had a wonderful time getting to know each other, making new friends and exploring our new classroom.  We have been busy building, painting, singing, reading, dancing, dressing up, drawing, writing and counting to name just a few of our activities!  This afternoon we made the most of the dry weather and visited our Forest School Area for the first time.

I thought it would be useful to share some details about our daily and weekly routines.

Mornings

Weather permitting the children will remain on the playground until the second bell goes at 8.50am when they will come into the classroom.  I will be out on the back playground each morning so if you need to drop your child off and leave for work they will be fully supervised until we go into school.  It is also a good time to catch me for a chat if you have any questions or concerns.

Bookbags

All the children now have a school book bag, please send these into school each day.  They are checked each day so any letters for the office can be placed in the bookbags.  Similarly, we will send home any school letters via the bookbags.  They will also be used to transport reading and homework books later in the term.  Please can I ask that water bottles are not put in the bookbags as they can leak over the books.

Milk and snack

All children receive free milk up until their 5th birthday.  If they would like to carry on having milk after this date you will need to book this directly with the school milk provider.  The school office will be able to provide further details of how to do this.  We have a selection of fresh fruit in school each day for the children to have at story time.  Any non fruit based snacks that you send in for your child will be eaten outside at playtime.

PE and outdoor learning

PE will take place on a Thursday afternoon.  If you are able to send your child's PE kit into school in a named PE bag we can keep this in school on their peg and it will be sent home each half term for washing.

Outdoor learning will take place on a Friday afternoon.  We have waterproof trousers and spare wellingtons in school but please send in an old waterproof coat for this activity.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and we are looking forward to seeing you on Monday morning.

Skylarks

Well what a wonderful first few days! The children have really impressed us with their enthusiasm and resilience, particularly the Year 1s as this class is a new experience for them.

The children have spent the last few days settling in and getting used to the new routines of the classroom. They have thought of a target they want to achieve this year and have done some writing about themselves. We have also done Big Maths today and some counting.

Some important information

PE will be on a Tuesday and a Thursday so please ensure PE kits are in school on these days and those with long hair have it tied up.

Outdoor Learning will be on a Monday. Please send your child to school with appropriate clothing for the weather, especially as it starts to get colder. If you want them to bring in their wellies they can, if not we have spares at school.

From next week all children will be bringing home a library book and also their Little Wandle reading book. Year 2s will also have maths homework and spellings. Please see next week's newsletter for more information on this.

In DT this half term the children will be designing and making smoothies. If your child has any food allergies that we're not aware of then please let the office or myself know before next Friday. Thank you.

Kestrels

It has been lovely to welcome the children back after the summer holidays. They have settled down into their new class extremely well and we have spent the past few days getting to know each other better, as well as learning class routines and expectations.

PE

The children will have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are hoping that the rhyme 'T day is PE day' will help us all remember our kits!

Homework

The children will be set 15 garage games on TTRS each week. These will be set on a Friday and need to have been completed by the following Wednesday.

The children will have one page of their Mental Arithmetic book to do each week. Again, they will bring these books home on a Friday and they should be handed in by the following Wednesday.

The children will be given spellings on a Friday. They should practise these on Spelling Shed and they will also practise these during handwriting sessions at school. Rather than testing the children on these words each week, we will be looking to see the children spell these words correctly in their school work. Please note, spellings will start being given out next week. There is no spelling homework this week.

Merlins

The children have settled into their new classroom wonderfully and it has been a real pleasure getting to know their personalities and seeing friendships begin to grow. This week, we have been learning our new routines, exploring classroom rules, and discussing the expectations of being in Year 5/6.

We have also enjoyed our first writing lesson, plenty of handwriting practice, our first geography lesson to launch our topic on the Alps and even listened to the Young Voices songs for the very first time!

Please remember that PE kits should be brought in on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Maths books, reading records, spellings and TT Rockstars will be set/given out on Fridays, with maths homework and TT Rockstars due on Wednesdays and reading records expected the following Friday.
