In Collective Worship we have been looking at

Spirituality

What a week it has been! I hope you're all managing to stay cool in this wonderful weather we've been having.

First, I must say a huge thank you for your patience with the building work that's been going on. I know it's disrupted some of our normal routines, but I'm delighted to tell you that the hall is already looking so much brighter and cleaner! The improvements are really starting to show, and I think you'll be pleased when you see the finished result.

I wanted to reassure you about our lunch arrangements during these hot days. The children are spending their lunch times outside under the lovely shade of our trees and in an air-conditioned classroom to keep nice and cool. This setup is working really well for everyone, so we'll be continuing with this approach next week.

Hopefully, everyone received their child's end of year report via email yesterday. If you haven't received yours, please do come and find me as this is a new system for us and I can sort it out straight away. There's been one small glitch where some of you might notice an extra unauthorised absence showing up. This was simply due to the timing of when I approved the final reports and when afternoon registers were taken, but don't worry, this has all been sorted now.

Kestrels had the most brilliant time at the 'Big Sing' on Wednesday. This was the first time we've taken part in this event, and it was so well received by the pupils who went. They represented Abberley beautifully, well done to all of them! A special mention to Charlotte who joined some other soloists on the stage and sang beautifully.

Just a quick practical note for Wednesday,  we'll be sending home lots of school books, so please could your child bring in a bag for life to carry them all home safely.

Tuesday is Enterprise day for Merlins. A separate email on Monday will be sent out with more details.

Wednesday and Thursday evenings are the school production. Please pop into the school office to purchase tickets.

Friday is our leavers' assembly in the village hall at 2pm. Everyone welcome.

Finally, please do look out for our parent survey next week. This is such a valuable opportunity for us as a school to celebrate what we're doing well and identify any areas where we might need to improve.

Have a wonderful weekend, and I'll look forward to seeing many of you tonight at the fete.

Claire Shelley Headteacher

Wrens

It has been another busy week in Wrens and with all the warm weather we have felt very grateful for our shady outdoor area.  On Thursday we welcomed our new children into school for their final transition morning which meant our current Wrens spent a morning in Year 1.  The children came back with big smiles on their faces and are already looking forward to joining Skylarks in September.

We completed our balance bike programme this week. The children have really enjoyed this activity and have gained valuable confidence and control skills through the programme. Hopefully they will be able to translate these when riding their pedal bikes outside school. On Wednesday we continued to practise our sewing skills with Mrs Postlethwaite in DT.  The children have made some lovely bookmarks featuring different coloured stitching.

This week we have also been learning all about the Christian place of worship - a church.  We explored different churches around the world and the children built some fantastic models, remembering to include key features like a cross and a spire.   We then explored what items we would find inside a church.  Today we walked down to St Marys church and it was lovely to be able to identify all the different features we have been learning about in class.  We followed this by a picnic and play on the village green before returning to school for lunch.

Thank you for returning all reading and library books this week.  The children will not be bringing home any books this week although we are continuing to practise their reading in school.

Skylarks

As we approach the end of the school year, the children have been working hard on their assessments and the results have been very positive – they should be extremely proud of themselves!

In English this week the children worked together to create a mind map of adjectives to describe Little Red from our book. Then using these ideas they started to write a character description.

In maths, the children have been learning how to tell the time. We have focused on o’clock and half past, using a variety of practical activities to help them master these skills before moving on to problem solving. We have also started to look at quarter to and quarter past times.

In our history work, we have explored a famous event of the moon landing in 1969, discussing why this was a significant event. The children enjoyed watching a video about the event and writing questions they would ask Neil Armstrong about the event.

In science, the children built parachutes and conducted science experiments to see how they could reduce the impact of landing. It was a wonderful opportunity to combine science with creativity. The children each had an egg and their parachute and holder needed to protect the egg from breaking.

Timetable

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the orange phonics book. Information is on the front page of the book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday.

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday. Spellings in the blue book will be handed out on Friday.

Kestrels

In maths this week, both Y3 and Y4 have completed end of term assessments. This was the children's opportunity to show all that they have learned this term.

In DT, the children finished designing their cushions. They cut out the applique they had chosen and started to sew this onto their fabric. The children could choose between using running stitch and cross stitch to do this. They will finish their cushions next week.

In history, the children continued with their topic of 'The Romans' and were studying artefacts from Vindolanda. This was a Roman fort built to house soldiers who protected the Stanegate, the main Roman road that ran from east to west, just south of Hadrian’s Wall. The children were using photographs of the artefacts to make deductions about the lives of Roman soldiers in Britain.

Merlins

We’ve had another busy and exciting week in school and I wanted to share some of the wonderful things your children have been working on.

In English, the children have now written four out of the five paragraphs of their invention narratives and, I must say, they’re sounding absolutely fantastic! The creativity on display has been incredible, and it’s clear the children are confidently using the rich vocabulary and the range of writing skills they developed last half term.

In science, we’ve carried out two different experiments this week. One focused on magnets, where the children explored magnetic and non-magnetic materials through hands-on investigation. The other involved the separation of solutions, where they experimented with filtration techniques there were some excellent predictions and observations made during both sessions!

This week also included our transition morning. The children spent some time in their new classrooms, getting to know their new teachers and environments. It was also lovely to have our current Year Fives working alongside Year Fours to prepare the classroom for September. They also tackled several fun Taskmaster challenges, which helped build teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Finally, we had our dress rehearsal for the summer production! The children performed in front of Key Stage One and their teachers and they did a brilliant job. The performance gave them a great sense of where they need to focus their final rehearsals and I’m genuinely so excited for you to see the final result!
