In Collective Worship at the moment we have been looking at the

School Vision

                                             Love, Grow and Flourish Together

  • We will feel loved and show love to others in our school and community

  • We will seek to grow in our understanding of all that is around us

  • By living our school vision, we will live a fulfilled life be able to all live well together.

Our recent TED day proved incredibly productive as staff worked together to reorganise our outdoor classroom and plan how we can use our outdoor area to enrich our curriculum. The lovely view we now have across Abberley orchard creates such a peaceful and inspiring learning environment. There's something truly special about connecting education with nature, and our enhanced outdoor classroom will provide endless opportunities for hands-on, experiential learning.

A gentle reminder for our Year 5 and 6 pupils who have signed up for bikeability – please don't forget to bring your bikes next week!

Meanwhile, Merlin's class experienced something quite extraordinary today with a visit from 'Alan Sugar Shelley' to launch an exciting enterprise project. The energy and enthusiasm in the classroom was absolutely infectious! The pupils have been divided into four companies, and now need to think how they can invest Mrs Shelley's money into a profitable business idea. Merlins now have just two weeks to develop and prepare their business pitches – I have no doubt we'll witness some truly innovative presentations. This project perfectly embodies our commitment to developing confident, creative thinkers who aren't afraid to take on challenges.

It's moments like these that remind me why I'm so passionate about education and so proud to be part of the Abberley Parochial family.

Wrens

It has been lovely to see the children back refreshed after their half term holiday and hear all about their adventures.  Today there was great excitement in Wrens as some tiny and very hungry visitors have come to stay.  I wonder if you can guess what they are?  We will keep you updated on what happens to them.

Our guests are linked to our new topic "All creatures great and small" when we will be learning about some of the world's amazing animals.  In art with Mrs Postlethwaite we have been exploring the artist Eric Carle who wrote and illustrated lots of famous children's stories about animals.  Over the next few weeks we will be working collaboratively to try and recreate his art style using paint and tissue paper.

In PE we have started a new topic on Games.  This week we learnt that it is important to listen to the rules and play fairly as it makes the game much more fun for everyone.  Next week we are looking forward to having a football taster session with Kidderminster Harriers on Wednesday afternoon.

We have started rehearsing our songs for our Early Years Music Festival which will take place at The Chantry on Tuesday 1 July 2025.  The theme this year is fairy tales and the children are welcome to dress up if they would like to. We will be sending letters home with further details shortly.

Skylarks

This week's English lessons have had a big focus on handwriting. The children have worked hard to ensure they are forming their letters accurately and consistently.

In maths this week we have finished our unit on measurement. The children have been using centimetres and metres to order and compare lengths and heights. They have also been using the four operations of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing to solve problems with lengths. At the end of the week, we started our new topic of money. Children looked at all the different coins and notes and were able to recognise the value of these. Any practise or games at home with money will be beneficial to the children as we move through this topic.

In history, we finished our unit on how schools have changed over the last 150 years. The children shared all that they had learnt over the unit before expressing their personal opinion on whether they would prefer to go to school in the present day or in the past.

For PSHE on Tuesday please can Year 1s bring a photo (or a copy of a photo) of them when they were a baby/toddler as our topic is Changing Me.

Timetable

Monday: Wellies and appropriate clothing for outdoor learning.

Tuesday: Swimming, please bring in swimming kit and towel.

Thursday: PE kits - please can those with longer hair have their hair tied up ready.

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the orange phonics book. Information is on the front page of the book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday.

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday. Spellings in the blue book will be handed out on Friday.

Kestrels

In maths this week, both Y3 and Y4 have been learning about money. We have been learning about how to convert between pounds and pence and then using this knowledge to add money. Y4 have been using their learning from before half term on decimals, to write, order and compare money.

In PE, the children enjoyed a football session with a coach from Kidderminster Harriers. They focused on ball control and practised this through games.

In history, we started our new topic of 'The Romans'. We began by looking at the different buildings in Ancient Rome and using them to explain what was important to the people who lived there.

In computing, Kestrels have become website designers! Today we have been learning how to import text, images, media and links ready to create our own website pages.

Merlins

This week in English, we’ve placed a strong focus on handwriting. The children have been working hard to form their letters and words correctly and I’m already seeing such fantastic improvement in the presentation of their work. More importantly, the children are beginning to take real pride in the way their writing looks, which is wonderful to see.

In maths, we’ve been developing our understanding of how to calculate the mean (average) of a set of numbers. The children have not only grasped the concept well but have also been applying their knowledge to solve challenging problems. It’s been great to see their confidence grow with this new skill.

Our history lessons have taken us back to the time of the Vikings. We’ve been analysing historical sources to learn more about Viking raids and what they reveal about Viking life. To consolidate their learning, the children wrote thoughtful and imaginative letters from the perspective of Anglo-Saxon villagers, describing how a Viking raid has impacted their lives. The empathy and creativity shown in their writing has been impressive.

This afternoon, we are launching an exciting new Enterprise topic. Over the next two weeks, the children will be working in teams to develop their own business ideas with the goal of making a profit. They will be preparing a presentation to pitch their business to Mrs Shelley and other school leaders, as well as creating marketing materials – including a video advertisement for their product or service. I can’t wait to see the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit the children bring to this project.
