Our value in Collective Worship at the moment is

Wisdom

Firstly, a hearty well done to our Year 6 pupils who have completed their SATs. Your hard work and dedication have been truly impressive, and we're incredibly proud of each and every one of you.

As we bask in the glorious sunshine this week, it's been wonderful to see pupils making the most of the outdoors for their learning. The playground has been buzzing with activity, and the smiles on their faces have been absolutely delightful. It's moments like these that remind us of the joy that comes from a well-rounded education that embraces both indoor and outdoor experiences.

I'd like to bring your attention to an important safeguarding measure. After drop-off, if you find yourself still on the playground after the bell has rung, we kindly ask that you exit through the back playground and use the gate where I stand each morning. Please refrain from exiting through the school building. This small change helps us maintain a secure environment for all our pupils.

Next week, the NSPCC's 'Speak out. Stay safe.' programme is taking place at school. This valuable initiative is designed for children aged 5-11 and aims to help them understand and recognise different forms of abuse. Through age-appropriate virtual assemblies and classroom activities, our pupils will learn the importance of speaking out if they're worried, whether to a trusted adult or Childline. For more details, see below.

On a different note, we're on the lookout for any DIY-savvy parents who might be able to help us transform pallets into a mud kitchen for our wildlife area. If you have the skills and are willing to lend a hand, please come and see me. Your contribution would be immensely appreciated and would help complete this exciting area for our pupils to explore and learn in.

Thank you to the Friends for a wonderful disco tonight. Lots of fun was had playing games, eating sweets, face painting and dancing in the foam! I have three purses which were left behind. Please pop into the school office if you have lost one.

NSPCC’s Speak out. Stay safe. Programme

I am pleased to inform you that we are participating in the NSPCC’s Speak out. Stay safe Programme next week. Speak out. Stay safe. is a programme for children aged 5-11 which aims to help children understand abuse in all its forms and to recognise the signs of abuse. Children are taught to speak out if they are worried, either to a safe adult or Childline.

This child friendly programme is aligned with the curriculum and consists of age appropriate virtual assemblies and supporting classroom based activities which we have reviewed, alongside NSPCC volunteer led face to face workshops for children aged 6-7 and 9-11.  The content is delivered in an engaging and interactive way with the help of the NSPCC mascot Buddy.

Parents and carers are asked to let school know if their child may have experienced anything (in the past or happening now) which may mean they need extra support before, during or after taking part in this programme.

If you would like to know more about the Speak out. Stay safe. programme visit www.nspcc.org.uk/speakout.

Wrens

The Wrens have been working hard this week whilst also getting to make the most of the beautiful weather.  We are pleased to report that our beanstalks are growing well. This week we combined our learning on plants with our DT skills to make our own delicious rainbow fruit salad.  We had a lovely outdoor picnic and some of us had 3 helpings!  In RE we have been exploring our amazing natural world and looking at the beliefs held by Christians about creation.

In maths this week we have been revisiting our careful counting skills.  We have been practising counting larger groups of objects thinking carefully about the pattern of the numbers beyond 10 to help us. Maybe you could take some time to practise this skill at home with your child.

In phonics we are nearing the end of our summer 1 unit of work.   The children are continuing to progress really well with their reading and writing.  It is lovely to watch them using the strategies they have learnt to read and write words like chimpanzee, squelch and lightning. Next week we will be looking at words with the endings ed, ing and est.

Homework

Phonics sheet in the orange book and sharing their celebration reading book with a family member.

Timetable

Skylarks

This week in English, the children have continued to explore similes, personification and rhyming words. At the beginning of the week, they finished off their imaginative personification sentences about the Great Fire of London, bringing the flames and buildings to life. Later in the week, they were given key words linked to the fire and worked on identifying rhyming words for these. They also began planning their own rhyming poem about the Great Fire of London, ready to begin writing next week.

In maths, we have been building on our understanding of multiplication and division. At the start of the week, the children worked on dividing by ten. As the week progressed, they then began to multiply and divide by five. They have been developing fluency and confidence with these important number facts through a range of activities and problem-solving tasks. Any more practise at home will help them moving forwards.

In history, the children were exploring old photographs of classrooms and our school from the past. This led to some great discussions and curiosity about how school life has changed over time. The children then wrote thoughtful questions they would ask someone who attended our school in the past, such as: What did you wear to school? Were your teachers strict? What was your classroom like?

In DT this week, the children have been busy designing a moving vehicle. They’ve used their understanding of wheels and axles to help shape their designs, thinking carefully about how their vehicle will move. They are looking forward to bringing their creations to life when they begin making them next Friday.

On Monday next week Skylarks will be enjoying a visit from 'Teaching Trees'. They will be participating in different outdoor activities throughout the morning. Please send your child to school in outdoor clothes and shoes that are appropriate for the weather.

On Friday, please can your children bring anything they need to make their moving vehicle in DT eg egg boxes, milk bottle tops etc - they will know what they need from their design!  There will be some materials at school but please do bring in what you need for your own vehicle.  Thank you.

Timetable

Monday: Wellies and appropriate clothing for outdoor learning.

Tuesday: Swimming, please bring in swimming kit and towel.

Thursday: PE kits - please can those with longer hair have their hair tied up ready.

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the orange phonics book. Information is on the front page of the book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday.

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday. Spellings in the blue book will be handed out on Friday.

Kestrels

In science this week, as part of our topic of 'Sound', we were learning about pitch. We looked at various musical instruments and discussed whether they were high or low pitched. We also talked about how we could change the pitch of these instruments. We learned that the faster an object vibrates, the higher the pitch of the note. The children then made pan flutes and found that the smaller pipes produced a higher pitched sound.

In PE, we focused on jumping. The children were investigating whether they jumped further taking off on one foot or two. They then looked at the best technique and then practised this, competing in groups to see who could jump the furthest.

Homework

15 mins on TTRockstars to be completed by Wednesday.

One page of Mental Arithmetic book to be completed and handed in by Wednesday.

10 games on Spelling Shed should be completed by the following Monday (Y3)/Tuesday (Y4) in preparation for the weekly spelling test.

Timetable

Every day: Reading book and reading records.

Tuesday: Swimming.

Wednesday: Outdoor PE kit.

Friday: Reading record books marked.

Merlins

This week has been an incredibly important and eventful one here at school, particularly for our Year 6 pupils, as it marked SATs week. The children have shown remarkable focus, resilience and determination while completing all the necessary Maths and English assessments. I am incredibly proud of the maturity and positivity they have displayed throughout this challenging week.

A special mention must also go to Year 5 who have worked with patience and independence while learning separately from Year 6. They’ve shown wonderful dedication and continued to make us proud with their hard work.

In history, we’ve continued exploring the fascinating world of the Vikings, focusing this week on their trade routes. We studied major routes such as the North Atlantic, Baltic Sea route, Volga route and Dnieper (Napa) route. To consolidate their understanding, the children worked collaboratively in small groups to create board games, complete with question and answer cards, which allowed them to reinforce their learning in a fun and engaging way.

Excitement is also building as we began rehearsals for this year’s production of "Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits." I was incredibly impressed to see how many of the children have already learned their lines and this dedication was clear in their enthusiastic performances during our first full practice.

In art, we’ve been drawing inspiration from the Scottish artist Kitty Jones, known for her vibrant seaside paintings. The children have been working hard to emulate her unique style, experimenting with colour, composition and brushwork to create their own seascape-inspired pieces.

Next Thursday morning

Next Thursday morning, the children will be spending time in our outdoor wildlife area helping to improve its usability and appearance in preparation for more outdoor learning during the summer months.

Please ensure your child comes to school in clothing that you don’t mind getting muddy or messy as they’ll be involved in some hands-on, practical work. Old clothes and sturdy footwear are ideal for the day.

Homework

15 min on TTRockstars to be completed by Wednesday.

One page of Mental Arithmetic book to be completed and handed in by Wednesday.

10 games on Spelling Shed should be completed by the following Friday in preparation for the weekly spelling test.

Timetable

Every day: Reading books and reading records.

Tuesday & Thursday: PE kit.
