In Collective Worship this week we looked at

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

What a glorious Green Day we have had today. The Eco pupil group led all of the activities so we could learn why the Mountain gorillas remain a critically endangered species in urgent need of protection. The pupils demonstrated excellent leadership skills. Well done ECO values group.

We were so lucky with the dry weather on Monday! Thank you for supporting the Sports afternoon and well done to all the pupils for an afternoon of fantastic sportsmanship. An extra well done to all the members of BEECH house, the overall winners of the afternoon.

Next week, we are looking forward to watching the KS2 production (Tuesday & Wednesday) and I know the cast have worked extremely hard in learning lines, songs and making props. If you have not bought a ticket yet, pop into the school office as there are still tickets available.

Also next week, some of our younger pupils will be joining together with Abberley pre-school to learn about animals with a visit from the animal man. The school will be paying for this event as an enrichment to our science curriculum.

On Sunday night there is a very important and hopefully (historical) national game of football! I am sure as a family you will be watching this game and supporting England. I am aware that the game will finish past many of our pupils' bedtime and in order to get up for school the next morning they may have to go to bed at half time. Therefore, on Monday morning I will extend registration upto 10am allowing the opportunity for children to stay up later into the evening. School will open as normal at 7.50am (Breakfast club) and 8.40am, fully staffed if your child does not require the extra time in bed.

Have a lovely weekend and Come on England!

Claire Shelley, Headteacher

Wrens

We have enjoyed lots of exciting activities in Wrens this week.  We hope you all had as much fun as we did on Monday at Sports Day.  We were so lucky with the weather and the children did themselves proud with their enthusiasm and sporting abilities.  It was a great afternoon!

On Wednesday morning we had a lovely walk down to the church and really enjoyed exploring the features of a Christian place of worship before having a run round on the Village Green. Please see our news article for more details.

Yesterday, Reception enjoyed spending their morning in their new class with Miss Rixon. They came back full of excitement about the different activities they had done in the morning.

We also finished our topic work on dinosaurs this week by finding out how palaeontologists discover what dinosaurs ate.  Did you know that as well as looking at their teeth they also investigate fossilised dinosaur poo?

In maths, we have been looking at maps and directions as part of our work on "visualise, build and map".  We drew our own pirate island maps to support our pirate themed continuous provision activities.  We also produced some excellent maps of the route we took to walk to the church.

Thank you for sending in your Little Wandle and library books this week.  We will be sending home forest school clothes at the beginning of next week but the children will need to keep their PE kits in school until Thursday as we have our final Kidderminster Harriers football session on Tuesday and our final house sports event on Thursday.

Homework

Phonics sheet in the green book and sharing their celebration reading book with a family member.

Timetable

Thursday & Friday: PE kits

Friday: Reading books, library books and green phonics books

Skylarks

This week in English, we have carried on with a focus on the book The Tiger Who Came to Tea. The children drew a picture of the tiger before annotating it with adjectives to describe it. They then used these adjectives to compose expanded noun phrases. They have also been thinking of verbs and adjectives to describe the tiger. Next week they will compile their work to write a character description about him.

In maths, Year 1 have continued to practise telling the time to o'clock and half past. Any extra practise of telling the time at home would be greatly appreciated. They have also been looking at the days of the week and months of the year and ordering these. Year 2 have been learning how to use the language of position. They have used this to describe movements and turns, including making quarter, half, three-quarter and full turns both clockwise and anticlockwise.

In history, the children sorted images into pictures of healthcare and hospitals from the past and present. They justified how they knew when the images were from before by writing some sentences that identified similarities and differences between healthcare and hospitals from the past and present.

In art this week, we started a new topic about expressionist art. The children really enjoyed looking at this style of art and made really thoughtful suggestions for what the artist might have been thinking and feeling when they created the pieces.

There are no Little Wandle books going home this week so we can carry out an audit of the books.

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in a red phonics book. Information is on the front page of the red book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. The library 'sharing' book should be enjoyed and read together as it will contain words with graphemes which have not been taught in school yet

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) 'Garage' set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. Spellings go home on a Friday to learn before the test the following Friday. There are 10 games on Spelling Shed set to help the children learn these

Timetable

Monday: Little Wandle book and library book to be returned to school. New library 'sharing' book will come home tonight

Wednesday: Year 2 TTRS and mental arithmetic homework book due in

Thursday: PE kit in school

Friday: PE kit in school. Spellings sent home for test the following Friday. Mental arithmetic book sent home. TTRS homework set. Little Wandle celebration reading book sent home

Kingfishers

In English, the children have been continuing to work on our biographies of William Shakespeare.  They have gathered some key facts that they will need to include in their final pieces of writing.

In maths, we looked at interpreting data in the form of bar charts. We will be moving on to drawing bar charts in the next lessons.

Years 3 & 4

We are coming to the end of many of our topics for this year and this week has been the culmination of many of them:

In DT, the children have tested and evaluated their slingshot cars and completed the work on this topic.

In geography, the children explored the many different advantages and disadvantages of both local and imported food and wrote a balanced argument explaining the same.

The children have also completed their work on birthdays in France. The children have enjoyed this topic and performed really well throughout.

We also had sports day this week which the children thoroughly enjoyed and took part in with great enthusiasm.  Well done to all of them who took part in the different races.

Timetable

Tuesday: KS2 performance at 6.00pm.

Wednesday: KS2 performance at 6.00pm.

Thursday: House Rounders Tournament in the afternoon.  Please bring in PE kit.

Years 5 & 6

In geography this week, the children worked collaboratively to decide which energy source they felt was best suited to a proposed plan for a city. They had to consider the human and natural geography of the area provided on the brief and give their reasons for their choices. Groups worked to create a short video presentation which provided their reasons for their choice, the advantage of their energy source, the disadvantage they had to consider as well as provide an example of where in the country this energy source has been used successfully.

In DT, the children were able to put their recipes to the test by creating their very own Bolognese sauce. The children worked with a wide variety of ingredients and cooking equipment to create a sauce that had the right balance of flavour. They worked brilliantly in their groups and took home a sauce they could be proud of.
