Our value in Collective Worship at the moment is

Forgiveness

Even the lovely wet 'summer' weather has not dampened the amazing achievements of Abberley pupils this week! Year 4 were excellent ambassadors during their residential. Today the whole school watched the wildlife reports they created which showcased pupils' scientific knowledge and computing skills. Year 6 demonstrated team work by paddling a bell boat on the River Severn on Wednesday (news story to follow). These pupils were awarded Headteacher and Values Certificates today, with the Wrens gaining the most pompoms to earn the 'Golden Lunchbox' reward.  Well done Abberley.

Next week:

Saturday 15th June 10am - 2pm. Clearing the wildlife area. Please bring a rake and a raincoat!

Year 6  Bike ability is Monday untill Wednesday.                                                          Year 5 You will need your bike on Thursday.  If you need to keep your bike in school overnight then we can lock bikes inside the school building.

Friday is non-uniform day in return for a tombola prize.

Yours sincerely

Claire Shelley, Headteacher

Folly Farm Day 3
On our final day at Folly Farm we headed back up into the woods. David, our instructor, talked about the different reasons for building a shelter. The children then split into two groups to design and build their own waterproof shelter. They were warned a storm was coming (David, Mrs Gregory and Mrs...

Wrens

We had a very dramatic start to our week when we found our cloakroom in a terrible mess on Monday morning.  After we examined the footprints we concluded a dinosaur was on the loose.  We decided to make posters to warn everyone else in school.  Outside in our construction area we worked collaboratively to build some very inventive dinosaur traps and even built a jeep to go on dinosaur safari!  Later in the week we found out more about dinosaurs in Topic.  Did you know dinosaurs walked on land and have their legs tucked underneath them?

In maths this week, we have been learning about odds and evens and doubles.  We learnt that odd numbers cannot be shared between 2 people as we always have a remainder.  In doubles, we learnt a rhyme to help us remember our doubles up to 5 and had great fun making our own doubles world.

In both RE and PSHE, we have started new topics.  In RE, we are looking at special places and thought about which places are special to us and how they make us feel.  In PSHE our topic is "Changing Me" which is all about how we change as we grow up and will also cover some activities to help the children with transition into Year 1.

We were very excited today to be awarded the "Golden Lunchbox" for receiving the most pom poms during "Happy Lunchtimes".  We are looking forward to our treat of squash and biscuits next week!

Skylarks

This week Year 2s have been completing assessments in English and maths. They tackled these with maturity and have worked hard to show off their knowledge. They should be very proud of themselves, as am I!

In English, we focused on vocabulary from our new book, 'The Squirrels Who Squabbled'. The children encountered a range of new words and made predictions about what these meant before reading them in sentences. Year 1 also wrote a book review with details about the plot and the characters.

In maths, Year 1 have been learning about and using number lines to 100. They have also been identifying 1 more and 1 less from any given number to 100. Using their knowledge of numbers, Year 1 have also been comparing numbers to 100. Year 2 have been telling the time to the hour and exploring the number of minutes in hour to solve problems.

In art this week, the children carried on making their fish sculptures. After making the basic shape out of a plastic bag last week, they added fins and details out of newspaper. Then they used Modroc to add layers, which will turn hard and be ready to paint.

In history, our topic is 'Healthcare and Hospitals'. This week, the children recalled many of the ways that we can find out about the past from our previous unit. We then looked at a variety of images linked with hospitals from both the past and present.

In music this week, we listened to 'The Aquarium' from Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens. We talked about the tempo and dynamics used by the composer. We began to learn a new song, 'The Rock Stars of the Reef'. We used different percussion instruments to add in a rhythmic pattern at the end of each verse.

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in a red phonics book. Information is on the front page of the red book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. The library 'sharing' book should be enjoyed and read together as it will contain words with graphemes which have not been taught in school yet

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) 'Garage' set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. Spellings go home on a Friday to learn before the test the following Friday. There are 10 games on Spelling Shed set to help the children learn these

Kingfishers

In English the children are continuing to work towards their character descriptions by building fantastic figurative language to describe the movement of their character to help build a picture in the mind of the reader.

In maths, we have looked in more detail at angles and turns. The children were introduced to acute and obtuse angles and we are moving onto measuring and drawing accurately.

Years 3 & 4

In science, the children did a brilliant investigation into the inner workings of flowering plants. The children had the opportunity to dissect flowers to identify the features.

In computing, the children are learning the basics of building a website and developing the skills needed to build their own.

Previously in French, we have learned the French for numbers up to 31 and this week we introduced the days of the week.

The children have also been involved in practising for the KS2 End of year performance. They have been acting or getting props ready for the performance. They have all been brilliant and are really enjoying themselves.

KS2

This week in KS2 we have had a great week of rehearsals. On Monday, we had a morning rehearsal with years 3, 5 and 6. The children did a fantastic job of delivering their lines with confidence and expression. Later in the week, we did a rehearsal in the village hall where the children managed to get through the entire production. I am so proud of the progress they have made and so look forward to watching them get better and better.

On Tuesday, year 5 and 6 conducted a science experiment. We explored the impact activity has on heart rate after testing what happened to our heart rate after exercise. We then explored the idea that the heart rate may change when in uncomfortable but still positions. Children set out the aim and method of their experiment and made predictions before collecting data in the groups. They finalised their experiment by writing out their results and conclusion based on the aims of the investigation.

In geography this week, we explored renewable and non-renewable energy. We have looked closely at different sources of energy and identified the benefits and drawbacks of using each.

In DT, we adapted a spaghetti Bolognese recipe. We began the lesson by taste testing two different Bolognese sauces and comparing flavour and texture, deciding which we preferred most. We changed, removed and added ingredients to a basic, existing recipe and identified the appropriate quantities for each.
