Our value in Collective Worship at the moment is

Wisdom

Thank you to Mr Bradley for coming to the rescue when we realised our field grass was too long for our mower and black puffs of smoke were appearing! The grass was a perfect length for the house cross county challenge.  It was great to see perseverance, team work and good sportsmanship from all the pupils today. Another super sporting event organised by Mrs Lightfoot.

Also, thank you to Mr Farley for jet- spraying the fence ready for the Year 6 pupils to paint this week. We now have a beautiful entrance into school. Well done Year 6 pupils for their painting skills.

Abberley would not be the wonderful place it is without this help from the whole of our school community.

After half term children will be taking part in a road safety day (Friday 7th June) whereby they will be learning how to cross our road safely, bringing  tips home for parents driving past the school gate and learning how to walk along our school lane.

On Tuesdays, Year Reception and Years 5 & 6 will have Kidderminster Harriers leading their PE lessons. Remember to bring in PE kits on these days.

Wednesday 5th June we will have the photographer in school who will be creating a 2024 whole school photograph. Details about purchasing this photo will follow.

I wish you all a happy half term and I'm sure we all would like to also wish Mr Darling a happy wedding day this weekend.

Claire Shelley, Headteacher

How does your garden grow?
Wrens have been investigating what conditions plants need to grow. They planted bean seeds in jam jars and plant pots and placed them in different locations around the classroom (light, dark, warm, cold). Some of the seeds were given water and some were left dry. We are now waiting patiently to see...

Wrens

This week in Wrens we have been learning about the lifecycle of a frog.  Mrs Lench made us a wonderful pond in the tuff tray so we could explore the different stages of the lifecycle from frogspawn to tadpole to froglet to frog.  We also enjoyed using the jelly and water beads to make our own version of frogspawn!

In maths, we have been exploring vocabulary and consolidating our understanding of key vocabulary as well as doing some problem solving to compare the capacity of different shaped containers.  We also extended the work we did on addition and subtraction stories last week to solve some missing number problems with the aid of 10 frame and counters.

In phonics, all the children have progressed to the next level in reading and they all tackled their new books with confidence and enthusiasm.  Well done, Wrens!

In RE, we learnt about how Christians praise God through song and prayer and enjoyed singing some of our favourite worship songs before writing our own thank you prayers.

In PE, we completed our unit of work on Games by looking at what makes a good team.  We played a series of team games and concluded that the most successful team was the one that talked to and encouraged each other.

The children have all worked incredibly hard this half term and it has been lovely to look through their books and see the progress they have made.  They should all be very proud of what they have achieved and I hope you all enjoy a happy and relaxing break over half term.

Homework

Phonics sheet in the green book and sharing their celebration reading book with a family member.

Timetable

Tuesday & Friday: PE kits

Friday: Reading books, library books and green phonics books

Skylarks

This week in English, the children have been practising the skill of editing with a piece of writing they completed previously. They have thought carefully about their vocabulary and punctuation choices to improve this piece. They have also been writing up their favourite diamante poem they have produced and turning it into a piece of artwork.

In maths, Year 1 have focused on position and direction. They have been describing turns, learning their right from their left and describing forwards, backwards, above and below, as well as learning how to use ordinal language correctly. Year 2 have been learning how to recognise and identify three quarters of an amount, count in fractions to a whole and tell the time to o'clock and half past.

In geography, we summarised our learning about Shanghai. The children thought about what life might be like in Shanghai in comparison to Abberley. They then drew the view they would see out of a window in Abberley and a window in Shanghai.

Have a great half term and hopefully the sun will reappear!

This week in English, the children have been writing persuasive letters which link to our class book 'Rooftoppers'.  The children have written some fantastic letters which showcased formal language.

In maths, we have focused on time.  This has been a challenging topic but the children have persevered and are progressing really well.

Years 3 & 4

In geography, the children finished their unit on 'Why are rainforests important to us?'. Their final task was to compare the Amazon rainforest to Sherwood Forest and identify differences and similarities.

In science, we finished the topic 'states of matter' concluding with a quiz to consolidate the childrens' learning.

Kestrels

In English, the children have been working on writing an alternative ending for 'The Wind in the Willows'. This has given them the chance to show their fantastic imaginations and some interesting endings have been written!

In maths, we have moved on to statistics and we have started by revisiting the children's prior learning on pictograms and bar charts. This gave us a good opportunity to revisit how important it is to look carefully at the scale used on a bar chart to ensure the numbers are being read correctly.

There will be no homework over half-term. The children have worked very hard over the past seven weeks and have earned a rest!

Merlins

Y6 have had a brilliant week of environment mornings where they have been working hard to make our school look fantastic. This week, the children have painted our fences and hand rails, swept and cleaned our ramp and playground area, weeded the school grounds, topped our flower beds with bark and pruned our tree into 'Yoda'.  They showed great collaboration, resilience, determination and have learnt a great deal of new gardening skills. They ended the week with hot chocolate and their brand new leavers hoodies!
