Our value in Collective Worship at the moment is

Easter

We have made it to the end of another wonderful term of learning and fun at Abberley. This week it was the turn of Years 5&6 to enjoy their residential and to make some memories with their friends. I have heard lots of great stories so I know everyone had fun. Thank you to the staff, as without you leaving your own families we would not be able to offer these extra curriculum experiences.

Yesterday, it was wonderful to watch both key stages perform during the Easter services. It always amazes me how confident Abberley pupils are to perform infront of large audiences.

The school was over run by 'bunnies' yesterday as children hopped their way over obstacles to raise money for Acorns. Thank you to Mrs Lightfoot and the CREW for organising this event.

Tonight we enjoyed the excitement of the 'Wonka Challenge' and hopefully even if you didn't find a golden ticket,  you enjoyed eating the chocolate bars! Thankyou to Friends for organising this event.

I wish you all a restful and happy Easter break. We look forward to seeing lots of smiling faces on Tuesday 9th April.

Claire Shelley, Headteacher

100% Attendance

Today we celebrated that these five pupils have not had one day off since September and were awarded a chocolate bunny for their 100% attendance. Mrs Shelley has set the whole school a summer term challenge to see how many pupils can achieve 100% attendance during the summer term.

Acorns Bunny Hop

The children had a fantastic time yesterday participating in our Acorns Bunny Hop.  Mel from Acorns Hospice came to join in the activities and present an assembly to Key Stage 2 telling them a bit more about the work of the Hospice.

Please see our news article for more information.

If you would like to make a donation to Acorns Hospice please use the Just Giving Link below or send your sponsor money into school.

Thank you for your support.

Wrens

What a wonderfully busy and exciting week we have had to finish off the term.

On Monday we enjoyed a lovely trip to Bayton where we watched a fantastic puppet show of "The Selfish Giant".  The children were fascinated not only by the performance but also by the different mechanisms of the puppets and asked some excellent questions in the question and answer session after the show. They were a credit to the school.   On Thursday we had a very busy and energetic morning participating in our Easter bunny hop to raise money for Acorns Children's Hospice.  It was lovely to be able to share this event with families and friends and I'm sure you will agree that the children did a wonderful job performing their Easter songs and rhymes.  Thank you for your support.

In the classroom we have been busy finishing off our topics on number and measurement in maths and it has been lovely to see the progress the children have made and how they can now confidently explain their answers using the correct mathematical vocabulary.  We have also been busy in art utilising the skills we learnt with Mrs Postlethwaite earlier in the term to weave some lovely Easter baskets and create some wax resistant Easter cards.

In RE, we recapped the Easter story and the children were able to recall and order the key events and explain why Easter is such an important celebration in the Christian faith.  Finally, in phonics we have been carrying out assessments which will be used to inform our planning for next term.  Again it has been very rewarding to see how much the children have progressed since the start of term.

I hope you all have a lovely Easter break and we get some sunshine!  The children have all worked incredibly hard this term and should be very proud of everything they achieved.  Great work Wrens!

Skylarks

This week in English, the children have been describing the character of Traction Man using expanded noun phrases. They have also been learning what similes are, how to write them and how they make our writing more interesting to read.

In maths, Year 1 have started learning about measurement. They've compared lengths and heights of objects and each other, measured items using non-standard units and have learnt about centimetres and how to measure using a ruler. Year 2 have focused on their 5 times table and spotting patterns within this. They've also used their knowledge to divide by 5. We ended this week with a maths Easter hunt around the school grounds.

In science, we've been learning about parts of the human body. This week the focus was on the parts of the body associated with the 5 senses. The children thought about their senses to identify their favourite smells, tastes and sounds. We also went on a nature walk around the school grounds and they recorded what they could see, hear, smell and touch.

On Tuesday, Year 2s had a visit from Safety Seymour who taught them about carbon monoxide. Please see the news article for pictures and more information.

In music this week, we have been learning to sing Dance to your Daddy. We explored the difference between rhythm and pulse, using a selection of different percussion instruments to perform the rhythm. We discussed what each instrument is called and how it is played.

We hope that those of you that came enjoyed the Bunny Hop for Acorns and the songs that the children performed. Have a lovely Easter!
