Compassion

Another great sporting week at Abberley. This week, our girls' football team were in action playing against Lower Broadheath. They won convincingly 5-0 and will now progress to the quarter finals of the Under 11 Girls Worcestershire tournament. A great display of teamwork and sportsmanship - well done girls.

I know it is still November but soon we will be into Christmas season. I have updated the website calendar to include the Nativity and Carol Service dates for parents/ carers who may need advance notice for booking time off work.  To help us get in the festive mood, please support the Friends event next Thursday when they will be hosting a Christmas Fair in the village hall. More information at the bottom of this newsletter.

I have received an email from the Children’s Commissioner for England  about The Big Ambition. It aims to hear from children across England on what they think is important! In the lead up to the next General Election, the Children’s Commissioner wants to take children’s thoughts, opinions and ideas to decision-makers, to make sure that the Government hears young people’s voices on what they think needs to be done to make children’s lives better in England. If you would like to take part in this, please click on the link for more information.

Polite Notice - Please can you ensure you sign your children out of Abberley Acorns when you arrive to pick up. Mrs Day uses the digital time recorded to instruct the invoices.

Have a lovely weekend.

Yours sincerely

Top tip for the week

It can be a difficult decision whether to send your child to school or not if they are feeling unwell.

The NHS have created this document for parents to help make this decision.

If possible, children should attend school because only 19 days absence in one academic year can render your child a' persistent absentee' when attendance data is recorded.

Wrens

This week we have been learning about the Hindu Festival of Diwali. On Monday we enjoyed an art lesson with Mrs Postlethwaite making salt dough diva lamps and Rangoli decorations.

In maths we met Numberlies 4 and 5 this week and we spent some time looking at the composition of the numbers and practising our careful counting skills.  In phonics we have now finished learning all the new phonemes we are covering this term. We will spend the next few weeks consolidating our knowledge before moving onto Phase 3 phonics after Christmas.   In PSHE, we have started our new topic of "Celebrating Difference." In this topic we are talking about how we are all different and enjoy doing different things.

We have begun rehearsals for our nativity play "A King is Born."  The children have been working hard to learn the songs and their lines.

Homework

Phonics sheet in the green book and sharing their celebration reading book with a family member.

Timetable

Wednesday: Outdoor learning clothes

Thursday: PE Kit

Friday: Green phonics book, library and reading celebration book

Skylarks

This week, Year 2 have been learning about non-chronological reports. They looked at lots of different examples and began to spot the features they all have in common, such as a title and pictures with captions. The children will be producing their own non-chronological report about meerkats, linking with our book Meerkat Mail. They have looked at different fact files about meerkats and began identifying specific vocabulary they want to include in their own.

In maths, Year 1 have been subtracting by taking away. The children then moved on to subtracting using number lines. The children worked hard at this and did really well. They have also been looking at the differences and similarities between adding and subtracting 1 or 2.

Year 2 have been adding and subtracting 10s and looking for the patterns with this. They have also been using Base 10 to add two 2-digit numbers not crossing tens.

We began practising for the nativity this week and the children all know what their role is. Early next week, your child might be bringing home some lines to learn.

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in a red phonics book. Information is on the front page of the red book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. The library 'sharing' book should be enjoyed and read together as it will contain words with graphemes which have not been taught in school yet.

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) 'Garage' set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. Spellings go home on a Friday to learn before the test the following Friday. There are 10 games on Spelling Shed set to help the children learn these.

Timetable

Monday: Little Wandle book and library book to be returned to school. New library 'sharing' book will come home tonight.

Tuesday: Outdoor learning - Wellies to be in school.

Wednesday: Year 2 TTRS and mental arithmetic homework book due in.

Thursday: PE kits in school.

Friday: PE kits in school. Spellings sent home for test the following Friday. Mental arithmetic book sent home. TTRS homework set. Little Wandle celebration reading book sent home.

Kingfishers

This week we have embarked on our learning about multiplication and division. The children have worked hard to understand how to use arrays to represent multiplication calculations.

In English, we have been building exciting word banks to help us with our character description. We are going to be describing a fictional creature and the children have been writing expanded noun phrases and how to combine verbs and adverbs to create interesting sentences.

Homework

Years 3 & 4

In science, we have continued our work on food chains. We looked at how the energy travels in a food chain and how a food chain always starts with the energy coming from the sun to a green plant. The children then created their own food chains.

This week in PSHE we looked at bullying and how it can affect individuals.

In geography, we looked in more detail at how volcanoes are formed along the edge of tectonic plate boundaries. We looked in detail at the different types of volcanoes and their varying features.

In DT, we are working towards the creation of a simple toy using a pneumatic system. We have looked at the importance of design before creation and the children have begun to share ideas about what they might like to make and had a go at initial designs.

Kestrels

In English this week, we have continued to read 'The Night Bus Hero' and learned more about Hector. The children are conflicted about this character as he is a bully, but then we have learned more about his home life which may explain some of his behaviours. We have used our work from last week to create similes and metaphors as well as 'show don't tell' sentences which the children have used to write a character description of Hector.

In maths, Y4 have continued to focus on their times tables. It has been pleasing to see their TTRS times on the 6, 7 and 9 times tables increase and the children are proud of their achievements. Y5 have been learning about prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers. Having a strong knowledge of their times tables has helped them be able to spot prime numbers up to 100 and also see the links between square and cube numbers.

Merlins

This week in Merlin's class we have continued to read our class book 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe'. This week we have been trying to get inside the mind of the white witch. We have considered her wishes, her desires and fears and went on to consider how we could write persuasively as this character to convince the Pevensie children to come to her ice palace.

In maths this week, we have been adding and subtracting mixed numbers. This has been a challenging maths topic where children have had to carry out multiple steps and avoid making even the smallest of mistakes to get each question right. I am proud of the perseverance they have all shown.

Years 5 & 6

In science, we recapped the different parts of the ear and practiced taking our pulse rate. The children then carried out an investigation about how exercise affects their pulse rate. They were given different exercises and had to predict which would increase their heart rate the most. The children were reminded about how to carry out a fair test and they will be using their results to draw conclusions next week.

In PE this week, we have continued our unit of outdoor adventurous activities. The children were practising their communication skills to carry out several tasks where they needed to achieve a common goal.

In fitness, we have learnt about stamina and speed and how consistency and positive self-talk are extremely important when it comes to building endurance.

In geography this week, we have been exploring the human and physical geography of Innsbruck in Austria. The children have used their research skills to find out as much as possible about this Alpine city before going on to explain what it is like to visit a place such as this.
