In Collective Worship at the moment we are exploring

The Resurrection

It has been truly lovely to welcome the sunshine this week. The brighter weather has brought a wonderful energy to the school, and it’s been a joy to see pupils across all year groups taking their learning outside to make the most of the spring air.

Year 3 Residential Success
At the start of the week, our Year 3 pupils headed off on their much-anticipated residential. They had an incredible time pushing themselves out of their comfort zones with a packed itinerary, including high ropes, abseiling, fencing, climbing, night trails, inflatables, caving, and even circus skills!

I was extremely proud of every single one of them. For many, this was their first time staying away from home, and it was a privilege to watch them grow in resilience and independence over just a few days. A huge thank you to Mrs Gregory and Miss Lane for looking after the children so well. Our staff do not get paid extra for attending residentials; they give up their time and leave their own families because they value the enrichment these experiences offer. Thank you for helping us all to live our vision of "Love, Grow and Flourish together."

Out and About in Nature
The Merlins made the most of the dry weather by taking their Science learning up to the wildlife area to plant seeds and bulbs. Meanwhile, Year 4 have been busy thinking about how we can make our school grounds more eco-friendly and improve our local biodiversity.

Today, our School Council was invited to Apostles Meadow to plant service-trees and wildflower seeds. We are really looking forward to using this area in the future for minibeast hunts and woodland walks.

Sporting Achievements
Well done to our Netball team. They competed in the cluster tournament yesterday and performed brilliantly, coming 2nd overall. What a fantastic result!

Outdoor Seating Appeal
In preparation for the warmer weather, I am looking to install some outdoor seating on the KS2 veranda to provide a sheltered space for children to relax during breaktimes. If you are updating your garden furniture and have any spare wicker or cane furniture you no longer need, please see Mrs Shelley. We would love to give it a new home!

Wrens

It has been so lovely to welcome the sunshine this week and it really feels as if spring has arrived. We had a wonderful day on Tuesday working outside with Year 4 (please see the news article for further details).  In the classroom we have been thinking about seasonal changes. The children talked about the changes we can observe in weather, plants and animals during spring.

In RE we also continued learning the Easter story and discussed why this is such an important festival for Christians.  In Forest School we created an Easter garden to represent key parts of the story.

In PE this week we played some team games and learnt that we had to listen to the rules and encourage each other in order to be successful.  We also talked about how a good sportsperson behaves whether they win or lose an activity.

In PSHE we have been talking about being healthy.  We discussed healthy eating and how having a balanced diet is important.  We talked about the different food groups and how some foods are treat foods.  In the home corner this week we have been practising making healthy lunchboxes.

We have also been busy practising some Easter songs and rhymes for our Easter celebration next week. We hope you can join us at 9.00am in the Village Hall on Thursday 26 March 2026.

Skylarks

In English this week, the children worked together in partners to explore the example text more deeply, looking for features that the author included that they will need to use in their own writing. For example, they identified expanded noun phrases, questions, suffixes on the ends of words and apostrophes for possession. This week they have also been working hard on writing a setting description for one of the illustrations in the book. The children did well with these and their ideas were very creative. To end the week, they began exploring more settings within the book, as in their writing they will be visiting three different settings during their boat journey. They did this through discussion, questions and role play before writing down some ideas of their own.

In maths this week, the children collated all of their learning on addition and subtraction to solve mixed addition and subtraction problems. They also used their knowledge to solve missing number problems, for example: 44 + ? = 76. Some children looked at using the inverse operation to help them solve these accurately. Later in the week, we started our new unit on multiplication and division. The children practised counting in their twos, fives and tens, as well as threes for Year 2. Any practice of these times tables at home would be very helpful, as it will help the children become more fluent as we move further through this unit.

In history, we looked at the explorer Matthew Henson, who was the first man to reach the North Pole. We explored who he was and learned about his important role in the expedition. We also discussed why Robert Peary received many of the awards and recognition at the time, despite Matthew Henson being the first man from their team to actually arrive at the North Pole. This led to some thoughtful discussions about fairness and how people’s achievements have been recognised throughout history.

In art this week, we explored the idea of hot and cold colours. Children then created a collage using hot colours in the style of Paul Klee's Castle and Sun.

On Thursday, Skylarks were lucky to take part in the Safety Seymour workshop, which focused on carbon monoxide (CO) and the effects these gases can have. The children learned how to look for warning signs and how to stay safe in the home.

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the orange phonics book. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Kestrels

Year 3 had an absolutely fantastic time during their residential visit to the Pioneer Centre and we could not be prouder of them. From the moment they arrived, every child approached each activity with enthusiasm, determination and a willingness to step outside of their comfort zones. Whether it was tackling new challenges or building on existing skills, they all tried their very best and showed great resilience throughout.

We were also incredibly fortunate to enjoy glorious weather for the duration of the trip, allowing the children to make the most of every opportunity on offer. They represented the school beautifully, demonstrating respect, kindness and positivity in everything they did. It was particularly pleasing to see their fantastic teamwork skills in action; the children supported one another, offered encouragement and celebrated each other’s achievements, helping everyone to push themselves that little bit further and grow in confidence.

Residential visits are always a highlight and it is such a pleasure to see the children in a different environment, where they can shine in new ways. One of the most rewarding aspects of the trip was watching the children develop their independence. They took responsibility for organising themselves, ensuring they were ready and prepared for each activity and showed a real sense of maturity in doing so. Overall, it was a truly memorable experience, filled with laughter, challenge and success and one that the children should feel very proud of.

Year 4 Sustainability Project

We had an exciting few days taking part in our sustainability project. We looked at ways to reduce the waste that we send to landfill and talked about the importance of recycling including all the things that are made from recycled materials. The children designed and created wonderful signs for our brand new bins.

Also, we spent time outdoors on both Tuesday and Wednesday, which was amazing with the beautiful weather we had. We looked at what we do well in both the forest school and garden areas. We discussed the benefits that our hard word produces.

As our new theme for sustainability is ‘The Lorax’, we even got to watch the film and work out the important message that it gives to us about sustainability.

Merlins

In English, the children completed a reading assessment. They showed great focus and resilience, working carefully within the time allowed and giving their very best effort. We are very proud of how seriously they approached it. Alongside this, we have been editing, correcting and rewriting our discovery narratives. The children have really enjoyed improving their work and we are preparing the finished pieces for a class display to celebrate their effort and progress.

In maths, we have been learning about area and perimeter. The children have explored the steps needed to calculate both measurements and have been applying their understanding to a range of rectilinear and compound shapes. They have shown excellent problem-solving skills when breaking complex shapes into simpler parts.

In history, we held a class debate on whether everyone should have the right to vote in elections, regardless of who they are or where they come from. The children impressed us with their thoughtful ideas, respectful discussion and ability to consider different viewpoints.

In art, we completed our layered portraits. The children focused on adding greater dimension and experimenting with different materials to create texture and depth. The finished pieces look fantastic and really showcase their creativity.

This week, we completed our science activities in the Outdoor Learning area. Working in groups, pupils completed activities including planting a variety of different bulbs, setting up a seed investigation and sorting a selection of different animal cards using the criteria of herbivore, omnivore and carnivore.

In computing, we looked at RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) and how it is used, e.g. pet microchips, using a self checkout, etc. We looked at how data is encrypted and used Excel to encode a random set of data. We also returned to using QR codes and completed a QR Trail while working in the Outdoor Learning area.
