In Collective Worship at the moment we are exploring

 Harvest Festival

A big thank you to all the parents who attended the Friends' AGM on Tuesday. We were thrilled to hold the meeting in our newly refurbished hall, a testament to the incredible fundraising efforts of our community. We're looking forward to more exciting events this year! I know the disco was a success tonight.

We were thrilled with the success of our recent Open Morning, thank you to everyone who came along and supported the event. I was particularly impressed by our pupil tour guides, who were incredibly articulate and confident. Many new parents commented on how enthusiastically our pupils spoke, which made me incredibly proud of our school community.

A special thanks to Hazel, Bryan, and Za Za for giving up their time to run our coffee morning.

We've had some fantastic sporting moments to celebrate this week. The 5 & 6 boys football team demonstrated excellent defensive skills during their tournament. However, due to the lack of goals scored they didn't progress any further in the tournment. Well done boys.

During another sporting event, children who represented Abberley at the Panathlon event displayed impressive PE skills and returned with beaming smiles and well-deserved medals.

Additionally, I'm excited to share that Charlotte and Marni from Merlin's Class will be representing our school at the Worcestershire STEM challenge finals in June 2026 after successfully impressing the judges during the first round of the competition this week.

Important notices for next week:

  • School Photographer: Monday 20th October for individual and sibling photographs

    • Pre-school siblings can be photographed from 8am (one group photo)
    • For additional or individual pre-school photos, please speak directly with the photographer to book an appointment at a different time.

Just one more week until the break. Let’s fill it with smiles, fun, and great learning.

Claire Shelley  Headteacher

To help keep our pupils safe, please remember not to stop on the zig-zag lines outside school or wave others across the road. The zig-zags are there to make sure drivers and children have a clear view.

The police have shared a short article explaining why this is so important — please take a few minutes to have a look Parking outside schools | Police.uk

Public consultation

The Trust Board of Holy Trinity School is consulting on plans to discontinue Sixth Form provision at the School. It is proposed that from the end of the academic year 2025/26, no further post-16 students would be admitted to the School. For clarity, this refers to both internal and external student applications. Students currently studying in the Sixth Form would continue and complete their studies at the School.  The consultation will run from 13 October to 12pm on 7 November 2025.

Wrens

We have been having some great adventures in Wrens this week celebrating autumn and harvest.  We have been using our lovely natural resources in our play creating some beautiful leaf craft and cooking up some harvest soup in the mud kitchen.  On Thursday we enjoyed showing some of our family and friends around our classroom and playground on Open Day.

In maths this week we have been practising our subitising skills (recognising how many objects we have without having to count them).  The children are becoming quite confident with this up to 3 and we will be moving onto looking for smaller groups within a larger group to help them subitise bigger numbers.  Maybe you can try this at home.

In RE we have started learning about how different people believe different things.  We looked at the symbols associated with the Islamic, Christian and Jewish religions and explored where we might see these symbols including buildings, books, jewellery and decorations.

We have now come to the end of our first phase of our phonics programme.  There will not be a new homework sheet this week as next week is consolidation and assessment week. Please take the time instead to go over the sounds we have already covered.  Thank you!

Homework

Phonics practice in the orange book and sharing their celebration reading book with a family member

Timetable

Thursday: PE kits

Friday: Outdoor learning so bring wellies (if possible) and a waterproof coat

Friday: Phonics homework book and library book

Skylarks

In English this week, we have continued exploring the story Old Bear by Jane Hissey. The children have been working hard on writing character descriptions of Old Bear, using key vocabulary and thinking carefully about their word choices to make their writing more engaging. We’ve also been discussing how the characters feel at different points in the story and predicting what they might be thinking as the plot develops.

In maths, our focus has been on number bonds. We’ve spent time finding all the different ways to make numbers up to 10, with a particular emphasis on finding these systematically. We then specifically focused on finding bonds to 10. This knowledge will help them in many areas of maths. Any extra practise at home of identifying number bonds to 10 would be great!

In geography, we explored different human and physical features on maps. The children then applied what they learned by drawing their own sketch maps of Abberley. We were so impressed by the level of detail and how observant they were when identifying and including key features.

In DT, we have started our new topic of making a movie storybook. The class began exploring different types of mechanisms, particularly sliders, and how they can be used to bring pictures to life.

On Thursday morning we had a wonderful time outside in the forest area. Our morning was all based around the book Stickman by Julia Donaldson. We read the book and discussed the story. The children then had time to create their own stick person, before pairing up and creating their own stick person adventure. After, we looked at shapes in the story and the children went on a shape hunt around the forest school area. They even found shapes in the canopies!

Timetable

Monday: Wellies and appropriate clothing for outdoor learning

Tuesday & Thursday: PE kits - please can those with longer hair have their hair tied up ready

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in the orange phonics book. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Tuesday.

Kestrels

In English, the children have been busy finishing and editing their final narrative pieces inspired by The Whale. They demonstrated real creativity in their writing, using descriptive language and carefully chosen sentence structures to bring their descriptions to life. After editing and improving their work, they shared their pieces with each other. We have also introduced our new book, Leaf by Sandra Dieckmann, where the children have been using the  illustrations to make thoughtful predictions about the story’s characters, setting, and possible themes.

In maths this week, the children have been learning how to use formal written methods for addition. They began by practising with non-carrying numbers to secure their understanding of place value before progressing to calculations that required carrying. The focus has been on setting out their work neatly in place value columns and understanding how digits move between columns when crossing tens or hundreds. The children have shown great perseverance as they worked through increasingly challenging problems and began to explain their reasoning using mathematical vocabulary.

In science, as part of our Living Things and Their Habitats topic, the children became nature detectives! They explored different areas of the school grounds, observing and recording a range of living things found in various microhabitats. They discussed what made each place suitable for the creatures they discovered and began to think about how living things depend on their environment to survive.

In art, the children have continued developing their textile work. Building on their designs from last week, they selected their favourite to draw carefully onto fabric. They then used glue to trace around the outline of their design, concentrating on control and precision. This stage of the process has helped them think about texture, line and detail in preparation for the next phase of their project.

Merlins

In English, the children have been writing up their Rose Blanche diaries in best, acting on feedback and making thoughtful improvements where needed. The quality of their final pieces has been fantastic, some have even made it onto our display board near the office, which was a real highlight during Open Morning on Thursday!

In maths, the children have been exploring multiples and factors, including how to find common multiples and common factors. This work has really strengthened their number knowledge and will provide a great foundation as we move into our next topic on multiplication and division.

In Design and Technology, the children have begun creating their bags. They have been working carefully with pattern pieces, adding seam allowances and making sure they have all the necessary parts ready for construction. We are hoping that, by the time we break up for half term, each child will have a completed bag to be proud of!

In geography, the children created their own tourist brochures all about the Alps. These showcased their understanding of both the physical and human geographical features of the region and the many ways visitors can enjoy them. It was wonderful to see how creatively they presented their knowledge and ideas.

Finally, we want to say how incredibly proud we are of the children during Open Morning. They did a fantastic job leading tours for parents, sharing their learning and representing our class with confidence and enthusiasm. They truly showed off our curriculum at its best.
