Our Collective Worship focus at the moment is

Palm Sunday and The Last Supper

As we approach the end of term, I'm delighted to share some exciting updates and reminders with you all.

Our Year 3 pupils recently returned from a fantastic residential trip to The Pioneer Centre. It was truly heartwarming to see our young learners pushing themselves outside their comfort zones, working together as a team and making lasting memories with their friends. These experiences are invaluable for their personal development. I'd like to personally extend a thank you to the dedicated staff who leave their own families to make these enriching events possible for Abberley pupils.

Today, we bid farewell to Holly, who is moving to a new house and school. I'll miss her creative artwork that has brightened my office walls. We wish her and her family all the best in their new adventure. We'd also like to thank Mr Haylar for his contributions to our School Governor board.

As we look ahead to next week, our last of the term, we have some exciting Easter celebrations planned. The Friends are organising an Easter Egg Hunt after school on Thursday. Pupils attending after-school club or Year 6 Booster lessons are welcome to join in afterwards. Please note that this event will be held on school grounds, and parents will be responsible for their children during the hunt.

Kestrels are performing and representing Abberley School at 'Dancefest' on Thursday morning. I'm sure this will be lots of fun. Please remember to come to school in their brightly coloured or camouflage outfits.

Our KS2 Easter service will take place on Thursday 10th April at 2:30pm in St. Michael's Church. For our younger pupils, Skylarks and Wrens will be taking part in an Easter bonnet parade and craft morning with Pre-school at the village hall from 9:15-10:15am on Friday 11th April. Parents are warmly invited to both events, and we look forward to seeing you there. For more details, please refer to last week's newsletter.

To round off the term, we'll be holding our house cross-country event on Friday afternoon. While this isn't a spectator event for parents, I'm sure our house teams will be cheering on their teammates with great enthusiasm.

Lastly, a gentle reminder to all parents: please be considerate of our school neighbours when parking during drop-off and pick-up times.

As always, thank you for your continued support and engagement with our school community. I wish you all a wonderful last week of term and look forward to celebrating Easter with you.

Claire Shelley Headteacher

Uniform Suppliers

We are pleased to inform you that we now have two uniform suppliers which will give parents/guardians more choice when purchasing school uniform.

Our two suppliers are now:

  • Myclothing – their website is www.myclothing.com
  • Border Embroideries – their website is www.beuniforms.co.uk

Border Embroideries/BE Uniforms is the supplier we have been using for a number of years and our new suppliers website, Myclothing, will go live for ordering on 14th April 2025. On both websites, just search for our school and it will show the items available.

Alongside these two suppliers, please don’t forget our pre-loved uniform shop. You are welcome to come and browse our shelves whenever school is open. We sell sweatshirts, cardigans, polo shirts, skirts, trousers, shorts, winter and summer dresses, joggers, PE Hoodies and PE t-shirts.

We have a lot of summer dresses in all sizes for only £1.00 and a large number of age 3-4 and 5-6 sweatshirts just ready for our new intake in September (it’s never too early to get prepared!).

We hope with more choice this will help with the cost of providing your child with a school uniform.

Severn Arts

Severn Arts teachers are making up missed music lessons next week; the piano teacher is coming in on Monday and Wednesday to make up the two lessons she has missed this term and the guitar teacher is coming in on Tuesday to make up the one lesson he has missed - please remember to bring in your guitar on Tuesday.

Wrens

I have missed the Wrens this week as I was off accompanying Year 3 on their residential visit to the Pioneer Centre at the start of the week.  However, the children were well looked after by Mrs Gregory, Miss Hughes and Mrs Postlethwaite in my absence.

They have been busy learning all about 2D and 3D shapes in maths.  They learnt how to identify different shapes using the correct mathematical terminology.  We had great fun spotting 2D and 3D shapes around school.  Maybe you could try doing a shape hunt at home.  We would love to see some photographs of what you find.

In PSHE, we have been learning about the importance of good hygiene including teeth cleaning and hand washing.

In RE the children are continuing to learn the Easter story and this week have been looking at the events of the Easter story and how this links to the idea of new life.  The children worked together to create an Easter garden and were able to recall the story accurately.  We have been working hard to learn our songs and also poetry for our Easter celebrations in the village hall next Friday.  The event will start at 9.15am and finish at approximately 10.00am.  We do hope you can join us.

Skylarks

This week has been assessment week in school and the children have been working hard across a variety of subjects. They have completed assessments in phonics, reading, writing and maths. They have shown determination and perseverance throughout these assessments. They should all be proud of what they have achieved.

In maths this week, the children have been exploring arrays. They have been using arrays to write repeated addition number sentences and the corresponding multiplication sentences. This has been a great way for them to see the connection between addition and multiplication. We have also continued to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.

In PSHE, our focus was on the five food groups and healthy food. The children had the opportunity to design a healthy snack that they could create themselves, such as fruit skewers. They learned about the importance of each food group and how to make balanced food choices.

In geography, we recapped the different seasons. The children were able to recall the types of weather linked with each season and could identify which clothes would be appropriate for each type of weather.

In music this week, we have listened to Pachelbel's Canon, discussing the instruments heard and the tempo of the music. We learnt to sing London's Burning and sang it as a round.

This week in RE we have sequenced the events of Holy Week and told the Easter Story.

Timetable

Monday: Wellies and a coat suitable for the weather

Tuesday and Thursday: PE kits

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in a phonics book. Information is on the front page of the book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) 'Garage' to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday. Spellings in the blue book will be handed out on Friday.

Kestrels

In Kestrels this week, while Y3 were on residential at The Pioneer Centre, the other children have been completing tests in reading, writing and maths as part of their end of term assessments. This has been the perfect opportunity to show their understanding of their learning this term.

The children were set a project of designing their own zoo. They were set a strict budget to buy animal enclosures, cafes, toilets, gift shops etc. and then they had to draw a detailed map of their zoo. The children had to come up with an advertising campaign, which included a poster and recording a video to encourage people to come and visit. It was great to see the children applying their learning in geography, maths, English and computing to good effect. The children then shared their projects with each other and gave constructive feedback on their designs.

In computing, Yr 4 enjoyed eating popcorn and watching the trailers they had created for their favourite book. There was excellent use of audio, filming, transitions and text to entice pupils to read these books.  Yr 3 will be sharing their trailers next week.

The Y3 children had a fantastic time at The Pioneer Centre as you will have seen in the news stories sent out this week.

Please remember that Kestrels are taking part in a Dance Festival at The Chantry this Thursday (10th) and should come to school in their brightly coloured or camouflage outfits.

The children should bring their school uniform to get changed into when we get back, ready for our Easter service at the church at 2:30pm the same day.

Merlins

In English, we have been focusing on core grammar and punctuation concepts. The children have been identifying and using main, subordinate, and relative clauses in their writing, as well as exploring the active and passive voice to understand how sentence structure affects meaning.

In Maths, the children have been working on converting fractions, decimals, and percentages, finding equivalence between them, and ordering them in ascending order. Towards the end of the week, we introduced our new topic of ratio, where the children have begun using ratio language to develop their understanding.

In Science, we have been investigating how shadows change throughout the day. The children explored the idea that while it appears as though the sun moves across the sky, it is actually the Earth’s rotation that creates this effect.

In Geography, the children have been analysing the data from their fieldwork study. They have been evaluating whether the information they collected helps to answer their enquiry question and considering how best to present their findings to each other.
