Our value in Collective Worship at the moment is

Mothers Day

This week, our charitable spirit was on full display as pupils munched on toast and sipped hot chocolate during break time. This delightful treat wasn't just for enjoyment - it also raised funds for the Salvation Army in Worcester.

Year 6 pupils had a fantastic afternoon at Flics Gymnastics, showcasing their agility and enthusiasm.

Also, Year 5-6 pupils are currently engrossed in a practical first aid course with Kidderminster Harriers. This isn't just another lesson – it's a life skill that could one day make a real difference. Our pupils are learning crucial techniques like CPR and other first aid practises. It's reassuring to know that we're equipping our young people with such important knowledge.

As I write this, our talented Netball Team is representing our Cluster at the county netball tournament. We're all rooting for them and wish them the very best of luck!

Looking ahead, our Year 3 pupils are eagerly anticipating their residential trip next week. These trips are often highlights of the school year, offering unique opportunities for learning, personal growth, and making lasting memories.

And don't forget, April 1st is our 'Bend the Rules Day'! I'm intrigued to see how our creative pupils will choose to break a school rule for the day. It promises to be a fun and memorable occasion.

Please read below for dates and times for our Easter celebrations. I have also put new term and TED dates below.

Wrens

This week in Wrens we have celebrating all the people who love us as we learnt about Mother's Day.    The children have been busy using their art and DT skills to make some lovely cards and presents.  We hope you enjoy them.  Our role play became a tea shop and we had lots of fun making cups of tea and some magnificent cakes in our outdoor tea tray.

In maths this week we focussed on the number 7 and learnt about the different number bonds which make up 7.  We finished our learning by calculating how many of the 7 little ducks were missing from the pond and writing a number sentence to explain our understanding.

In PSHE, we have been thinking about how we look after our bodies and stay healthy.  The children were able to advise Squawk the parrot on how to make healthy food choices for his lunchbox.  Later in the week, we also designed our own healthy meals.  We then talked about sleep and how it is important that we all get enough sleep!

The children have now finished the spring scheme of work in phonics.  There is no new homework sheet this week as next week is assessment week. Please take the time instead to go over the sounds, words and tricky words we have already learnt this term.  All of the children have worked incredibly hard this term and should be very proud of the progress they have made.

Next week we will be thinking about signs of spring so if you have the opportunity to go out for a walk with your child over the weekend, why not see what you can spot.

Homework

Go over the sounds, words and tricky words we have already learnt this term on the phonics sheets.

Skylarks

This week in maths, we have been practising counting in 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s.  The children are really getting the hang of recognising patterns as we practise counting. They have also been working on recognising and making equal groups, such as 5 equal groups of two. To end the week, the children used repeated addition to help them add equal groups together.

In science, the children had a fantastic time carrying out an investigation. Before testing, they made predictions about whether our feet all grow the same. Most children predicted that as a person gets older, their feet become bigger. They used rulers to measure the feet of several members of the class including the adults to test out their predictions.

In art, the children have been working on a mixed media piece inspired by the Great Fire of London. They used a variety of materials including paper, fabric, silks and felt to create a bright background of flames to which we will be adding buildings to.

In geography, we focused on the four capital cities of the UK. The children used an atlas to locate these cities on a map. We also explored the weather in each of these cities using a live Weather app. This activity helped them learn more about the different regions of the UK and how weather can vary from place to place.

Timetable

Monday: Wellies and a coat suitable for the weather

Tuesday and Thursday: PE kits

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in a phonics book. Information is on the front page of the book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) 'Garage' to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday. Spellings in the blue book will be handed out on Friday.

Kestrels

In maths this week, Y3 have moved on to a new topic of mass and capacity. The children have been learning how to read scales, using their fraction knowledge to calculate the intervals of different scales. They have revisited their prior knowledge of 1000g = 1 kg.

Y4 have continued their work with fractions and have moved on to adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. The children have used their prior learning to write their answers as improper fractions and then converted these into mixed numbers.

In science, the children were investigating a range of materials to find out if they were insulators or conductors. The children made a circuit and then included materials including plastic, wood, pipe cleaners, spoons and felt, to see if the bulb would still light up.

In geography, we looked at how rivers are formed. The children drew the three courses of a river and then described each feature using the correct vocabulary.

Towards the end of the week the children practiced writing effective story openings with different strategies. One used expanded noun phrases and interesting verbs and the other used dialogue between key characters. The children worked hard at this and we definitely have some potential authors in the class.

Wednesday: Outdoor PE kit

Thursday: Indoor PE kit. The children should come into school in their PE kit and then change into school uniform after their PE lesson

Friday: Weekly spellings given out and reading record books marked

Merlins

This week in English, the children have been completing their character descriptions of the Minotaur, focusing on the moment it attacks Percy in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. They have worked hard to include powerful vocabulary, strong verbs and vivid imagery to bring their descriptions to life.

In maths, we have been working on fraction, decimal and percentage equivalences. The children have been applying their knowledge to solve problems and tackle reasoning questions, strengthening their understanding of how these concepts are connected.

In geography, we carried out a fieldwork study in the village, where the children collected data using tally charts, questionnaires, sketch maps and photographs. They will use this data next week to present their findings in a meaningful way.

In science, we explored how the moon orbits the Earth and researched key features of the moon’s surface, including why it is covered in craters. The children were fascinated by the different theories behind the moon’s appearance and its impact on Earth.

Finally, in art, we have been studying the work of The Shoreditch Sketcher, Phil Dean. The children created visual notes on some of his most famous commissions, drawing inspiration from his style and techniques.
