Our value in Collective Worship at the moment is

Truthfulness

Our school has been buzzing with activity and learning, and I'm delighted to share some highlights with you.

Our KS2 pupils engaged in a crucial lesson on online safety and responsibility through the thought-provoking performance of 'Play, Post, Share, Repeat'. This experience has undoubtedly equipped our children with valuable insights into navigating the digital world responsibly.

I must extend my apologies for any muddy shoes that may have found their way home this week. Our grounds are exceptionally wet at the moment, and we've asked the children to stay on the tarmac areas to avoid the mud.

Thursday brought a truly uplifting moment as our houses performed their songs for parents, each exploring one of our cherished school values. The superb singing was a testament to our vision of being 'filled with the fullness of God' and showcased how Abberley provides enriching opportunities for our pupils to flourish.

Looking ahead, we have World Book Day coming up next Thursday. Please look at last week's newsletter to read the information regarding this year's theme – we're excited to see how our pupils and staff will engage with it!

Lastly, a gentle reminder for those parents who expressed interest in helping with jobs in our wildlife area: the school will be open from 10am to 2pm this Sunday. Your support in enhancing our outdoor learning space is invaluable.

Have a lovely weekend.

Claire Shelley Headteacher

After-school activities

Thank you to everyone who returned the activity forms prior to the half term holidays.  This ensures that the required amount of resources, especially for art-related activities, can be purchased in preparation for the club starting.

We realise there was a quick turnaround this last time, but it would be appreciated if you would complete and return the forms by the return date in order to both secure a place in the club and to give time to purchase the required materials.

Thank you.

Signs of spring.
Reception had a lovely afternoon outdoor learning yesterday.  The sun shone and the weather felt warmer.  We had lots of fun spotting signs of spring.  Unfortunately, we didn't spot any birds from our new bird hide - maybe we were a bit too noisy!

Wrens

It has been lovely to see the children returning to school refreshed after their half term holiday and ready to learn.  We have loved hearing about all their adventures and seeing what Pengee got up to during the half term holiday.  Thank you for taking the time to fill in his diary, the children have been so excited to share it with us.  Thank you also for bringing in the Proud Peacock sheets - it has been lovely to celebrate the children's achievements.

This week we have been learning about the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton using the book "Little people, big dreams".  We have been thinking about what it would be like to visit the continent of Antarctica.  The children have been using their writing skills to produce a class non-fiction book containing facts about Antarctica.

In maths this week, we have been revisiting the vocabulary more, fewer and equal.  We have been establishing that the size, colour, arrangement and nature of the objects does not matter when we are using this vocabulary.

We had a lovely afternoon at outdoor learning this week enjoying the warmer weather and spotting the signs of spring that are beginning to emerge in our school grounds.

In PE, we have started learning dance in our new topic and enjoyed using our imagination to recreate the movements of different sea creatures.

In PSHE, we have been concluding our topic on "Dreams and Goals" by revisiting the targets the children set themselves earlier in the term and celebrating our achievements.  Well done Wrens!

Homework

Skylarks

This week in English, we began exploring the topic of the Great Fire of London. Our new book for this half-term is Toby and the Great Fire of London by Margaret Nash and Jane Cope. To give the children some background knowledge on the Great Fire of London, they moved around the room in groups exploring different information, pictures and videos about the event. They then had to summarise the key information and create a mind map from their findings. Towards the end of the week, we began looking at non-chronological reports and identifying the key features they include.

In maths, we have been continuing our unit on addition and subtraction. The children have been working on adding to ten and adding across ten, as well as subtracting to ten and subtracting across ten. Any additional practice of addition and subtraction at home would be really helpful to reinforce their learning.

In science, we started our new topic: Animals, including Humans. This week, the children identified the basic needs that all animals, including humans, require to survive, such as air, water and food. We also discussed the differences between what a human needs and what they may want.

In art, we began our topic of watercolour painting. The children experimented with watercolour paints, exploring how they work and what they can create. They then used the watercolours to build imagery and tell stories through their artwork.

PE this half term is still on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Please send your child with their PE kit to school on those days. Tuesday is outdoor PE where we are learning about 'Target Games' and on a Thursday we are indoor doing 'Dance'.

Some of the Year 2 children will now be bringing home a blue spelling book on a Friday. Please try and find the time to read the information inside the cover and if you can help the children to practise their spellings at home during the week it would be greatly appreciated. The children will then need to bring back the books on Friday mornings ready for their session with Mrs Shelley. The spellings will be familiar to the children and they are the same words they have been practising in their Little Wandle Spelling sessions.

In music this week, we have looked at our new project, 'The Great Fire of London'. We listened to the Ritual Fire Dance and talked about the dynamics and tempo used by the composer, Manuel de Falla. We looked at the instruments used and discussed how to play them.

In RE, we have introduced our new topic, 'Why does Easter matter to Christians?' We talked about Palm Sunday and what happened as Jesus arrived in Jerusalem on a donkey.

Timetable

Monday: Wellies and a coat suitable for the weather

Tuesday and Thursday: PE kits

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in a phonics book. Information is on the front page of the book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) 'Garage' to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday. Spellings in the blue book will be handed out on Friday.

Kestrels

In maths this week, Y3 children have been converting between measurements, cm - mm and m - cm. We were using place value grids to help the children see the value of the digits, changing the column headings depending on which units they were converting. We used our prior learning of multiplying and dividing by 10 to help understand what was happening to the digits.

Y4 children were continuing their work on perimeter, focusing this week on polygons. We started with regular shapes and through discussion, the children were able to establish that regular shapes have equal sides and equal angles. Once the children were confident with finding the perimeter of regular polygons, we moved onto irregular polygons.

In science, we were looking at muscles and how they are used for support, protection and movement. The children were able to explain how muscles contract and relax and how we have voluntary and involuntary muscles. Louis was a perfect model to show this with his biceps and triceps!

In PE, the children had their first dance lesson with DanceFest teacher, Janine. The children had great fun, working in groups to choreograph their own routines. These sessions will culminate in a performance at The Chantry, with other schools who are also having these lessons.

To clarify, the children should come into school wearing their PE kit and will then get changed into their school uniform after their PE lesson. Apologies for this information not being shared before half term.

On Wednesday in English, the children used the five senses to help them write descriptive sentences about the characters and settings in our class book; The Iron Man.

Here are a few examples:

  • The Iron Man turned his head slowly to investigate what the clink, clink, clink sound was.
  • The Iron Man tasted the delicious metal on his taste buds as he chewed.
  • The Iron Man crashed into the dark pit with a deafening boom.

Merlins

In English, we’ve started reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, a book that has already sparked excitement among the children. They are really engaged with the story and we’ve begun building a vocabulary bank to describe the first creature that pursues Percy. This will help us when we move on to character descriptions in the next few lessons.

In maths, we have started a new topic on measurement. The children have been practicing finding the perimeter and area of compound shapes and rectangles. They’ve been doing great with these concepts and are developing their skills through plenty of hands-on activities.

In science, we’ve launched a new topic on Earth and Space. To begin, we’ve been naming the planets and researching their unique characteristics, such as temperature, speed of orbit and the number of moons. The children have shown a great interest in this topic and we look forward to exploring it further over the next few weeks.

In geography, the children have begun generating their own enquiry questions. These will serve as the basis for their independent fieldwork study, which they will be working on over the next six weeks. This is an exciting opportunity for them to carry out research and develop their own findings.

Finally, in art, we’ve been exploring landscapes. This week, the focus has been on perspective and the children have been working on drawing images that clearly demonstrate a vanishing point.
