Our value in Collective Worship at the moment is

Compassion

What a week it's been! Sorry for the unexpected snow day on Tuesday. The school would have opened as planned at 10.45am, but with no electricity this was not possible. However, while pupils were busy building snowmen and sledging on Wednesday, our staff were hard at work at the Birmingham Education Show. It was a brilliant opportunity to delve into the latest educational thinking and bring fresh ideas back to Abberley.

One of the highlights was meeting Matt Whitlock OBE, Britain's most successful gymnast. His fourteen medals and six titles in Olympic and World Championships are truly inspiring. It's moments like these that remind us of the incredible heights our pupils can reach with dedication and support.

Speaking of achievements, I'm thrilled to announce that Abberley secured 3rd place in the StreetTag competition! This fantastic result is a testament to our community's spirit and teamwork. Well done to everyone who participated – you've made us all proud!

On Wednesday 27th November, we're hosting a Maths workshop from 9am to 10am. Parents, please head to the school office after the bell. You'll have the chance to join your child for a maths lesson, followed by an insightful presentation from Mrs Gregory in the school hall. She'll be discussing timetables and their crucial role in various areas of maths learning.

And don't forget, Friday 29th November is our home clothes day. Pupils can ditch their uniforms in exchange for a tombola donation. More details in the poster below.

Here's to another exciting week of learning, growing, and achieving together!

What a different week we have had!  We were very excited to return to school on Thursday and hear all about the children’s adventures in the snow.  It is lovely that they were able to get outside and enjoy it.  Whilst the weather remains cold please can you ensure your child brings some gloves or mittens to school with them as little fingers very quickly become cold at playtime. Thank you.

This week we have started exploring the word celebration in more detail and thinking about why we celebrate things and what this entails. We have been learning about the Hindu Festival of Lights - Diwali.  We have explored how Hindus celebrate Diwali through making some beautiful Rangoli pattern decorations and Mendi designs.  We also studied the story of Rama and Sita in Drawing Club and talked about how the story plays an important part in the celebrations.

We have also started rehearsals for our nativity play, “The Inn-spectors”.  Some of the children are bringing home lines to learn.  Please can you help your child practise saying these in a loud clear voice. They do not have to be word perfect as long as the gist of the line is the same.  Thank you.

Homework

Phonics sheet in the green book and sharing their celebration reading book with a family member.

Timetable

Thursday & Friday: PE kits

Thursday: Reading books, library books and green phonics books

Skylarks

What a funny old week! I hope that you all managed to enjoy the snow.

This week marks the start of our nativity practise! Those children with multiple lines to learn will be bringing these home tonight. It would be greatly appreciated if you could help them to practise their lines and remind them to use a loud voice.

Thank you for sending your children with their toys for history last week. It really helped to get the children engaged in their learning. Next week for history, we will be looking at toys that were the children's favourite when they were babies/toddlers. If possible, please could you talk with your child about this and if there are any photos of them with their favourite toy it would be really helpful for them to bring this in. Alternatively, any photos could be sent to the office and I will print them for you.

Please remember that that Year 2 homework and Little Wandle books are due back on a Wednesday.

In music this week, we composed and performed a piece of music to represent a dinosaur. Using a selection of percussion instruments, we created sounds to represent how the dinosaur moves, exploring which dynamic would be best to use when performing.

Timetable

Tuesday: Wellies and a coat suitable for the weather

Thursday & Friday: PE kits

Homework

Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in a phonics book. Information is on the front page of the book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should also 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday

Homework

Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday and 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) 'Garage' to be completed for the following Wednesday. Please read the Little Wandle reading books that are sent home a few times. Little Wandle books to be returned on Wednesday

Kestrels

This week the children looked at past and present tense.  They have practised changing verbs so they are grammatically correct when writing in either the past or present tense. For example, Wilbur sleeps peacefully would become Wilbur slept peacefully in the past tense.

There was a shocking revelation in our class book Charlotte's Web this week when we discovered Wilbur the pig may end up as Christmas dinner! The children will be writing a persuasive letter in the coming week with the intention of changing the farmer's mind. The children came up with possible reasons to change his mind from considering a vegetarian option for Christmas lunch, keeping Wilbur as a prize pig for competitions and giving him his freedom out of the goodness of his heart.

In maths this week, both Y3 and Y4 have continued with their focus on times tables. Y3 have been working on their 3 times tables and Y4 have been using their recall of the 3, 6 and 9 times tables.

Having a secure knowledge of times tables is essential for children to grasp many different areas of maths and this is something that will be discussed in the upcoming maths workshop. Please encourage your child to complete their TTRS homework each week.

We have started our practices for the Carol Service and we were thrilled to see so many confident children auditioning for solo singing roles. The Carol Service will take place in the church on Thursday 19th December at 2pm and 6pm.

Merlins

This week in PSHE, the children have been learning about tolerance and how to handle situations where others may not show the same respect. They discussed scenarios such as racism and explored ways to respond calmly and thoughtfully when faced with less tolerant attitudes.

On Thursday morning, the children had a creative session making their very own stuffed Christmas decorations. They applied the design and technology skills they’ve been practicing through their soft toy projects and the results were truly impressive.

In art, the children reflected on their visit to the art gallery in Cardiff, sharing their thoughts on their favourite and least favourite self-portraits. They explored what the artists were trying to convey about themselves through their artwork, deepening their understanding of expression and creativity.
