Our value in Collective Worship at the moment is

Thankfulness

What a wonderful few weeks we've had at Abberley! It's been a joy to see our pupils engaged in so many enriching activities, both in and out of the classroom.

Thank you for joining us yesterday at our Harvest Festival service. Together we were able to appreciate the importance of harvest and join together in thanking God for the bountiful crops. I know the Salvation Army in Worcester will be extremely grateful for the mountain of food donations. These moments of reflection and celebration are so valuable in nurturing our pupils' spiritual growth and sense of community.

Updates on recent sporting achievements. A group of our children represented Abberley at the Panathlon Sports Event, returning with shining medals and even brighter smiles. Their dedication and sportsmanship were truly commendable.

Our Year 5 and 6 football team also deserves a round of applause. They put in a strong performance, scoring many impressive goals in what was a closely fought competition. While they were unlucky not to progress to the semi-finals, their teamwork and determination were outstanding. Well done to all involved!

Next week,  I'm very much looking forward to our parents' evenings on Tuesday and Wednesday. These meetings are a wonderful opportunity for us to discuss your child's progress and to strengthen the vital partnership between home and school.

Our upcoming House Football Tournament will be held on Friday afternoon. Given the muddy conditions of our field, we invite all pupils to bring old trainers or football boots, along with home sporting clothes if preferred over school PE kit. Children will get changed after lunchtime for this enjoyable house event. Sadly, this is not a parent spectator event but teams will be cheered on by their team mates.

As always, thank you for your continued support. It's a privilege to work with such a vibrant and engaged school community.

Claire Shelley, Headteacher

Top tip for the week

The digital 5 a day provides a simple framework that reflects the concerns of parents/ carers as well as children’s behaviours and needs. It can also act as a base for family agreements about internet and digital device use throughout both the holidays and term time.

Based on the NHS’s evidence-based ‘‘five steps to better mental wellbeing’, the digital 5 a day campaign gives children and parents easy to follow, practical steps to achieve a healthy and balanced digital diet.

Key Stage 2 Lunchtime Football

With all the recent rain our school field has become extremely muddy. We will be continuing with lunchtime football practice next week so please can the children bring in football boots or old trainers and a change of clothes if they wish to take part.  Thank you.

Wrens

We hope you all enjoyed our Harvest Festival yesterday.  The children performed brilliantly and it was so lovely to see them all joining in with such confidence and enthusiasm.  We were very proud of them.  This week we have been learning about harvest and why we celebrate it.  We had a range of very interesting fruit and vegetables in our Investigation area and we learnt that fruit contain seeds whereas vegetables do not.  We were quite surprised to find out pumpkins and cucumbers are a type of fruit!

In Drawing Club, we have  been looking at the story "Pumpkin Soup" by Helen Cooper.  In the book the animals make "the best pumpkin soup you've ever tasted".  On Friday we walked to the shop to buy the ingredients to make our own pumpkin soup next week.  Hopefully, it will be just as good as the pumpkin soup in the story!

In Forest School this week, we looked at journey sticks and talked about how these were made by Aboriginal people to remember the routes they had taken when travelling.  The children made their own journey sticks based on our walk around school.  We also created a journey stick of our walk to the shop.  Next week we will be making our own maps of Abberley using our journey stick to help us.

In maths, we have been exploring the composition of 2, 3 and 4. Our "big question" in the maths area this week involved finding different ways of displaying 3 spots on a ladybird.

The children have worked really hard in phonics and next week we will be carrying out our half termly assessments.  There is no phonics homework this week but if you could take the time to review the sounds learnt this term with your child this would be beneficial.

Please can I remind parents that we try and encourage healthy eating in school and we would be grateful if snacks sent into school could be fruit or vegetable based.  There is free fruit available daily in school for all the children in Reception and Key Stage 1.  Thank you.

Homework

There is no phonics homework this week please review the sounds learnt this term with your child.

Skylarks

This week in English, we started our new book, George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. The children are thoroughly enjoying the story so far! Alongside reading, we’ve been exploring the concept of instructions and identifying their key features.

In maths, we have focused on number bonds, helping the children understand the various combinations that make up numbers to 10. The children have worked systematically to identify the calculations starting from 0 or the given number.

In geography, we examined the human and physical features of coastal towns, specifically Weymouth. The children identified these features and worked in pairs to create persuasive advertisements encouraging others to visit Weymouth.

In science, we explored the life cycle of plants and planted radish seeds. This hands-on activity will allow the children to apply their knowledge of what plants need to survive and thrive.

On Tuesday, we will take a class walk to the village shop for geography to observe human and physical features along the way. Please ensure your child comes prepared with a coat.

Timetable

Monday: Wellies and a coat suitable for the weather

Kestrels

In English this week, the children used their research on domestic and wildcats to draft, then write a non-chronological report. They used many skills that they have learned over the last few weeks, such as using the correct tense, using adverbs of frequency and subordinating conjunctions. The non-chronological reports were full of factual sentences which are interesting to the reader. The children had to include other features of reports like a title, sub-headings, an introduction, topic language and paragraphs.

In music, we have rehearsed our melodic phrases ready to perform as part of a class ensemble. We have practised the rhythm and added the pitch using the glockenspiels.

In maths this week, Y3 have continued their work on formal subtraction. We have looked more into carrying out calculations that involve exchanging and have used place value grids and counters to help us 'see' how this works. This can be a difficult concept to understand and we have worked hard on remembering that we have to work from top to bottom and not the other way around! The children then used their new formal addition and subtraction skills to answer reasoning questions to help embed their learning.

In maths this week, Y4 have also continued their work on formal subtraction. They have been working with 4 digit numbers and calculations that involve two exchanges. They have grasped this concept well and have been able to talk about how they have answered questions and why they have made the exchanges they have. Y4 also used these skills to answer reasoning questions involving addition and subtraction.

In RE, the children have been looking at the features of a mosque. Their recent visit to a mosque really helped with this and the children were able to identify and describe the different features and explain what they were used for. It was lovely to see just how this visit helped to give them real life experience of their learning.

Merlins

In music this week, we have rehearsed our animal compositions ready for performance.

This week in English, the children have been honing their writing skills with a focus on using a formal tone. They have learned to identify and effectively use the subjunctive verb form in their sentences. Additionally, the students have been practicing using modal verbs and adverbs to convey certainty and possibility, enriching their writing with more detail.

In maths, our focus has been on identifying multiples, common multiples, factors, and common factors for pairs of numbers. This foundational knowledge is crucial as the students enhance their understanding of number relationships and develop their problem-solving skills.

In science, we have delved again into the fascinating topic of evolution. This week, the children studied the horse and examined how its head, jaw, teeth and legs have adapted over the last 60 million years to better suit its environment, illustrating the remarkable process of natural selection.

In DT, the children have completed their soft toys by using a blanket stitch to seal them together. This hands-on project has allowed them to apply their sewing skills and take pride in their finished creations.
