Summer Term 2018 Sports Report
The Summer term started bright and sunny and the children enjoyed being able to use the school field with the opportunity to try some new sports.
Year 3 and 4 had a busy sporting calendar in April and May.
They attended the year 3-4 football cluster tournament at The Chantry. In total 14 children took part in 2 mixed teams. The teams showed great sportsmanship both finishing midway in their leagues. For some children this was the first time they had played in a football tournament. Special mention must go to Oliver and Eesah who were our top goal scorers.
On a very warm afternoon in May a team of 10 year 3-4 children took part in the Cluster Tag Rugby tournament at The Chantry. This was the first time the children had played rugby competitively. The tournament was very enjoyable and it was lovely to see the children taking on the advice they were given from the coaches/referees and improving with every game. The team finished in a very creditable fourth place and Oliver received a well-deserved mini trophy for being Abberley’s star player.
It was then the turn of Reception who attended a very exciting and busy “Tiny Olympics” morning at The Chantry. The children took part in a range of different activities organised by the Chantry Young Leaders including relay races, obstacle courses, long jump, throwing the javelin and even limbo dancing!
After the half term holiday Key Stage 2 took part in Cluster Cross Country at The Chantry. Again the sun shone which made running conditions difficult. We were very impressed by the resilience shown by all the children to complete the course. Particular congratulations must go to Ruby who finished 1st in the Year 3-4 girls race and Charlotte who finished 3rd in the Year 5-6 girls race.
Year 6 then had a busy couple of weeks with Transition Sports Day at The Chantry where they got to meet and makes lots of new friends in preparation for secondary school. They also enjoyed the Bell Boating Regatta. A fantastic performance meant we finished in 4th place out of over 40 boats.
Through June and July Abberley caught the World Cup fever and all the children had the opportunity to represent their house in mixed Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 football tournaments. Group matches were played over a number of weeks at breaks and lunchtime with games being refereed by a group of very competent children from Year 5-6. The finals took place at the School Summer Fayre. In a very exciting Key Stage 1 match Ash house representing Australia beat Elm house representing Denmark by 5 goals to 2. The Key Stage 2 final was even closer between Columbia and Belgium with both teams representing Oak house. The final score was 6-5 to Belgium. Well Done to all the teams involved!
The Year 5-6 Football Team were delighted to learn they had been shortlisted for the Malvern Hills District Council Team of the Year Award. A group of representatives from the team went off to a very posh awards evening at the Bankhouse Hotel. Despite narrowly missing out on the final award we had a fantastic evening and the boys should be very proud of what they have achieved this year.
Our sporting year was brought to a close by an amazing Sports’ Day. In the morning we held our very first Abberley Race for Life event . The children and a few brave parents completed laps of the school grounds to raise money for cancer research. It was fantastic to see the whole school turning pink for a very worthwhile cause.
In the afternoon we held our tradition Sports’ Day where the children took part in a wide range of events including shot putt, sack races, egg and spoon and a very exciting relay cheered on parents and friends. Elm House were the final victors but it was wonderful the children putting many our school values into practice showing teamwork, compassion, resilience, trust, and courage.
It has been an amazing year for Sport at Abberley. Many thanks to all the families of all our competitors for their ongoing support including lifts to events, washing kit and cheering from the sidelines. We look forward to more successes next year!
