Miss Harvey is the class teacher in Sharks (Year 5 and 6 mixed) with part time support from Mrs Gregory. Mrs Lench offers extra support as a Teaching Assistant for part of the week. Sharks reside in The Ark, our new building that was built in June 2015. The Ark houses both our classroom and the Neptune Suite, our multi-functioning learning room which is used by the whole school throughout the day.
Children experience the curriculum through a range of exciting and innovative topics which are designed to inspire learning while developing skills of independence, resilience and creativity. Children enjoyed learning about the Viking culture by hunting for trolls and learnt about fair trade by running their own coffee shop. This approach to the curriculum helps the children to become completely engrossed in the topic providing a genuine purpose for learning.
As children move through the school they are given the opportunity to take on more responsibilities through our highly acclaimed Citizenship Programme. By the end of Year 6 children are capable of working independently and are ready for the next stage in their educational journey.
We follow the school’s Spelliarmus scheme with our spellings. The children receive a set of spellings each week to learn and are then tested on them in the following week.
In our handwriting we follow the school’s Pen-Jitsu scheme, which helps us to focus on our presentation and handwriting. We work through levels to improve our handwriting by working on letter formation and joined up writing. As we progress, we get achievements and rewards, with the grand aim to earn our Pen Power when we complete Sensei Jaune's targets.
Sharks class must complete 5 reads a week to be entered into their class reading rewards scheme. Children earn raffle tickets depending on how many times this goal is achieved which provides them with more opportunites to win class prizes and extra rewards when the raffle is drawn every 5 weeks. Children are encouraged to read books from different geners and post book ratings and reviews to inspire others. These are displayed around the class reading chair.
