Mrs Shelley and Mrs Postlewaite are the class teacher in Lovely Lobsters (Year 2).
We focus on providing a topic based creative curriculum which gives the children the opportunity to use their imaginations and experience their learning through both focussed group working and independent learning.
We encourage the children to take a creative approach to their writing. Past topics have included investigating fairy-tale crime scenes and becoming workers in Mr Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. The children participate in the School’s Spelliarmus scheme. Each week by learning their spellings they are able to help Loks and Soks on the next stage of their quest to save Spelliarmus and earn lego bricks along the way. We have our own library area in the classroom and the children are encouraged to read a range of books both in school and at home. Abberley's Key Stage 1 Reading Scheme is organised via different colour bands. Each colour band is a mixture of books from a variety of different published reading schemes mixed with real books so children get to read a variety of different styles and prints, fiction and non-fiction. As children become more fluent and able to discuss the content of the books within one colour band then they move to a different colour band. Children are rewarded for reading at home. Everychild has their own special bookmark to collect stickers to record the number of times they have read. Children are rewarded with special reading certificates and other class rewards.
In Numeracy children learn about number, measurement, geometry and statistics. Again much of our work links to our topic, for example plotting Little Red Riding Hood’s route through the wild wood, investigating how much food is needed for a teddy bears picnic and measuring our athletic performance in Olympic maths.
We are lucky to have a fantastic outdoor environment at our school and our curriculum is designed to make the most of the opportunities this provides. Children have weekly lessons (every half term) in the school garden and wildlife area where they learn about plants and animals (Key stage 1 Science Curricuum).
All children in Key stage 1 attend swimming lessons throughout the year.
